lacquer/finish yourself

i have some old drums w/ some really dirty ugly black wraps. since it doesn't matter what they look like, i was thinking i would put a finish on them or something myself for fun. has anyone tried it? How did it turn out?

well, i decided a couple days ago to just go for it. i slapped a dark brown stain on it, sanded it mostly off, then put two coats of a cherry stain on them so the dark parts of the wood grain really stand out. then i put two coats of clear gloss coat on. i think they look like million bucks, instead of 250 on ebay, :P
