Re: DW vs. Yamaha

Hmm Yamaha gets my vote this time.

The ONLY thing DW is doing any better than any other manufacturer is Timbre-matching the drums--and since they pateneted that process the others can't say they do it...

All the other manufacturers are using Keller shells or equivalent on their high-end kits, and all the hardware out there is decent on the higher end kits.

These pros could have their choice of ANY drumset, but chose Yamaha: Manu Katche, Carter Beauford, Steve Gadd, Billy Cobham, Dave Weckl, Sonny Emory, Anton Fig, Tommy Aldridge, David Garibaldi, Matt Cameron....

There has to be something to that besides a nice name...

Re: DW vs. Yamaha

hey man, me and one of my friends both own the MX series by DW, and we both love them...they're all maple with a nice warm tone and they sound great. The bass has a loud resonating boom that sends shivers through your spine....go with the DW...

Re: DW vs. Yamaha

From a quality control perspective, the Yamaha wins hands down.

Mirko, I thinkyou are so good you would sound great on milk cartons! Why do you like DW so much?

Re: DW vs. Yamaha

In my opinion, Timbre matching is a crock... human ear is not good enough to distinguish suttleties... many of the percussion differences are not even in the human hearing range.... and then when you go ahead and either amplify the sound or lay 100db of the rest of the band over it.... doesn't seem to hold together for me... Many Symphonies use Yamaha... I would love to do the blindfold test on some folks just to see if they are as dedicated to the brand as they say they are!!

Re: DW vs. Yamaha

Well the kit in the "Batman Superman..." video is not a DW but he is a very good drummer, and all of the still pics of Mirko and his kit after that are DW so that says something.

I personally own both a Yamaha Recording Custom and a DW Collectors and I love them both. They both sound very very good, but the DW has a slight edge on the Yamaha in hardware quality.

Re: DW vs. Yamaha

My drum teacher owns a 60's Yamaha and it ****s all over hit DW kit IMO... However, new? I dunno its a tough call, I think DW would be the way to go IMO, if you've the cash.

DW over Yamaha every time. I love DW kits - they always have a really tight sound.

Re: DW vs. Yamaha

DW's are a lot better than Yamahas.
They are more quality built and very rugged kits.
The kits perform greatly in recording too.
Dw's hard ware and heads are very robust as well.
(You see a lot more DW' on stage than Yamaha's other than Killswitch Engage's set)

Re: DW vs. Yamaha

I've got a Yamaha 9000 RC which is great, every DW kit I've heard also sounds great.Lets face it top-end stuff from major manufacturers is gonna be good regardless of make. I've also got a Camco kit so I suppose that sort of counts as a DW!!!
