Re: DW vs. Yamaha I've owned both (two) DW maple kits and a Yamaha Recording custom and they're both great.
I leaned more towards DW because in the beginning, they were like the old time big drum companies - they only made one line of drums, although I think this could be changing a bit with the addition of different lines, like birch and that eco-stuff.
But I do tend to think that the hardware is a little over-engineered, and not really designed for the weekend gigger in mind. It sort of requires that you have a crew of people to help you move all that tonnage around (if you go for the heavy stuff). And those woofer things? Cool idea, but how much space do you think you're gonna get on the little bandstand in that restaurant with the 4 other musicians?
An innovative company, indeed, but more designed for rockstars. Add an additional $600 for good cases too.
I think you'll find that as you go out and test drive kits, once you get past a certain price point, they all sound good. So you might as well buy what you're gonna love. |
