You need to find out what type of wood you like the sound of and look for a kit in that. I understand you like cherry, but that's probably going to be out of your price range.

The rock-pro kit has a blend of birch and basswood. These are not going to have as much projection as (for example) maple. Plus the rock-pro only comes with wrapped laminate finishes which will also hamper your sound.

My advice would be save the little extra and for the next one up , the pro-x which at least gives you a wood grain finish, or, go for a pdp CX or MXR maple kit which should be in your range.

Check out the online tuning bible here http://home.earthlink.net/~prof.sound/id10.html , get to a store and beat every different kit until you find the wood you like.

ok the yamaha kit has ...

10" 12" 13" 14" orange too! of corse 16" f tom and 22" kick I think i heard it in concert. the only reson it was sold was to buy a foot pedal (double bass Iron cobras that were fancy) the bad thing is no snair.

sound good for metal? it might work this way|

I own a set of Rock pro's. They get the job done but like skinslapper said, your better off saving up for a better kit. I really like my kit, but I know I would be 10 times happier with a higher level kit. I traded off my 91 pearl exports for them to get the extra toms, and even though they were more or less a mid level kit too, they were made so much better and they sounded great, I really miss them.
