Shell depth.

Hey everyone!

In the process of deciding on my new kit, Mapex have offered me far too many choices (bastards). One of which being three different shell depths for their racktoms.

Now I intend to get 18" deap bass drums and the deapest floor toms to really pump out the low end. Prof. Sound tells me the deaper the shells the louder and longer the sound. I figure if I got the deaper ones, I could always cancell out unwanted sounds with different heads, but from what I've heard, these shells are pretty loud already, DW are my fav drums in the world and they are always pretty shallow and I could use the extra space in my set.

What do guys go for in shell depth?

Prof sound is just one guys theories, and a great place to visit for any learner to get into the tuning and drum selection ball park, but there are so many other concepts as well, take it as a guide and not a bible.
Experimenting with what you have in your hot hand is going to be the crux of it all. Good that you are finding find out as much as you can to make an informed decision before parting with the hootie.

Here is some other info that may be helpful ?

Reason i got med size depths on my kit was mainly so i could get the toms over the 20" kick and close in so i can reach them, due to my small stature.

the nearer to square sizes are louder and deeper. long toms might produce a different 'perceived' depth but... loud is in square.
I like to play as flat as physical possible. In that I mean the drums are a table top so the snare is the focal point and the toms are as almost flat as the snare. of course not everyone likes this, but tried and tested speed research shows, the less distance you have to move the more energy you conserve.
I am pedantic though, and 1mm is a lot
I guess a 10" tom is not gonna sound like a 14 etc.....
