Yeah I remember seeing an add for these kits years ago. so how do they differ from a standard maple kit?

Cool design looks like no hardware inside the shell, everything is taken care of by the external rings around the drums exterior. Less stuff to rattle and make noise and dampen the drum.

That's exactly right there's no hardware penetrating the shell allowing the shell to resonate more freely.
