Studio Rings

I've heard that aquarian studio rings cut down on a lot of overtones and give the drums a nice thud for rock drumming. But how much do they actually cut down on? They're cheap, but I still don't want to spend money when it's not needed. And another quick question, the bottom head of the drum, if it is upgraded from the stock head, will the drum sound better?

The studio rings work. Its a lot like putting tape on your heads, with the exception that it comes off easily. For the second question; Usually. Just keep in mind that thicker bottom heads tend to ring a bit longer. How short of a sustain do you want? If tou want a deep thud with ZERO overtones, you might try a Evans hydralics/ Evans G1 combination.

I agree. Change your reso head for something better quality, but thinner than your batter head. The rings are just a means of dampening and cannot compare to the sound of your drums tuned well. Check out the following page for the best tuning advice on the web.

I have a fusion set its a little hard to get that thud out of it. But that tuning guide did help. ill probably change the bottom head with some g1s like pyrochazm said and get the tuning rings to add some thud. I'm also getting a 16in floor tom in a couple of months so i think that should help me get the sound i want.

Thanks for your help.

A LOT of pro drummers use a G2/G1 combination, just so ya know. (Danny Cary of tool and Morgan Rose of Sevendust come to mind). You can get a very wide variety of tones out of that. I am currently using Evans EC2's/stock bottom heads on my Pro-M fusion, and there is a bit of that "thud" tuned low. Ima gonna get some G1's for my reso side on friday.
