Should I fix this drum?

This is a snare that blew out on me years ago and after some research I found out that Sonor made wierd size drums back in the 60's. The lugs probably won't work on a regular 14" shell (the shell size is 13 3/4"). I realize it's a pretty bad blow out but with a lot of glue and alot of clamps it just may work. There is another hairline crack on the snare side too (last pic). Am I nuts? If I could find a 60's Sonor shell that was made for 16 lugs like this one I'd probably buy it. If not I'll sell or trade the parts for some stuff to get another project started (Just finished my first custom snare-pic included below). I also have some other old Sonor parts off the toms and kick.

If anyone has any advice or just wants to tell me how stupid an idea this is, go for it! Thanks,

Todd

Had one similar Sonor black in very poor condition. Someone found it in a chicken shed and gave it to me. After scraping layers of white poo of it and finding the odd sizing of the calf heads ( which i couldn't source replacements at the time) , it has become a display piece at my local musicians clubrooms.
If you wanted to use it, i would condider a modern shell and re-space the lugs to suit. You can wrap the shell any colour you like nowadays. See Precision Drum Company web site.

Well, it sounds like you've got the know how, I'd just be a little concerned that it wouldn't sound too sharp when you've finished with it. But then, it is an old snare, so it shouldn't sound sharp anyway.

Hey, if you've got the time, I say knock yourself out, and don't forget to letus know how you went with it.

You can get the heads re-cut if you can piece it back together nicely and that will help the tone and sharpness some. A drum tech is best bet to do it right. I did my old practice kit ( John Grey Broadway) with sandpaper and a jig to give the dented round edges an angle like modern drums, made a big difference, but that depends if you wanted to spoil the original characteristic of the drum also. The Sonor sound might be just what you want and could be worth more to a collector in that state ?????

No matter how much work you put into it you will over capitalise. with some careful gluing you could fill the cracks but it will still never be the same.

Possibly try some brass rods, drilled so they fit the lugs fill in all the holes and sand it up. might come up ok.... you end up with a free floating shell. I like your new snare drum they are the kind of lugs I am speaking of but not bolted to the shell..

That being said how much for the nutboxes??? cash....

Sonor snare repair progress Part 1

Here is what I did tonight. Used Gorilla glue and, as you can see, a TON of clamps. We'll see tomorrow what happens. Next step (hopefully) is sanding. After that a couple of coats os Tung oil to help out the dried out 40 year old Beech wood on the inside. Hopefully that will prevent this from happening again!

you can NEVER own enough clamps. Or Red Hook India Pale Ale, for that matter.

It looks like ya wanna do it - so just do it. All your really gonna lose is maybe a little time, & possibly acquire a large dose of frustration. Last I heard, - Neither was fatal.
PS--love your clamp collection---------Seriously--best of luck
