Lightbulb It's Alive!!!!

I would have to dub this the Frankenstein snare. It's the 14X5 Maple that came with my Pro M kit. Well It was. I didn't care for the sound so I bought a Tama Metalworks. Since I wasn't using this, I decided to experement. I replaced the heads with an Evans HD Dry/Hazy 300 combo. I also tossed the stock wires in favor of a gibraltar 40 strand set. Finally in a mad fit of insanity I punched a 1.5" hole at 10 and two O'clock with my friends drill press. It ended up sounding like no other snare that I've heard. It has a strange woody POP followed up by a bit of ringing due to a warped snare side hoop. I kinda like it.

Holey Snare Batman

That is a nice looking snare. I too would be interested in hearing the sound it produces when you get it sounding right. I would have thought that you would have gotten the ringyness (is that a real word??) , out of it with the Evans Hd dry batter head. What would happen if you tried a pair of diecast hoops ??
Now a question for an ancient Percussionist. What is the advantage of the large vent holes that I see so many drummers & manufacturers doing?? Do you get a drier sound, more volume, punch?? A place to keep your car keys?? I apparently missed the page in drum history when this became popular. I really don't understand what the purpose of it is. I would appreciate some input.
Thanks
The Old Guy.

A hole in one

Thank you Lastditch. I now know 100% more about holes in snare drums than I used to.
I hope the name "Tobacco Firecracker " sticks. That's a hoot.

The holes really dry out the sound, and adds a POP sound that can fe felt as well as being heard. Unfortunatly, it almost completly loses the CRACK sound typical of a 14X5 snare.
