Cable hat & double bass

Skinslapper; A cable hat is the perfect answer to your space problem. The cable hat can be clamped to any cymbal stand. Much easier to pack around than a hi-hat on a pipe. I originally started using one because of playing double bass. No matter what I tried, it just didn't seem to fit anywhere. You can see in the photo where it ended up. For me at least, it was a perfect location.

Yeah that's where I'm thinking of putting it on my rack. I imagine it'll feel weird for a while, but I'll get used to it. I'm a little apprhesive about having a too long cable. I don't want it to get tangled in everything and become a pain in itself. Are there replacemnet cables available or can they be coiled up?

Reminds, i found the cable foot pedal moved around a bit too, even on my magic carpet. The DW hihat pedal i use has velcro on it's base so it sits as solid as, just something to add fuel.

Thank you for the kind remarks on my old set. I sold that one a while back & am
now using a single bass set-up. That big yellow bird was my favorite of all of the sets that I put together.

Get a cable hat--It's the only way to go. Anything else is 1930's technology.

I have looked at and used several other brands of cable hats. My input is to go with the 9500 series of DW cable hats. Just take a look at the DW drop clutch. Most cable hats develop a little slack at the clutch which you can hear. You end up having to put in some nylon washers to take up the slack. The DW has a little micro adjustment on it that eliminates that. Their is also a tension adjustment that is drum key lockable. Many more options that the other guys just didn't think of. Remember that cables come in several lengths. The 8' length will go right under you bass drum if you put the hi-hat on the right side of your rack. I use an 8' cable for the right hat and a 4' cable for the left hat. Both are mounted on my rack. Yes you can get replacement cables. no trouble at all. Yes they can be coiled. Just give them lots of room in the coils. Hope some of this helps. This is probably the best view of how the cables lay.

Thanks man. Yeah I'll have to do some research of my own. Don't know if I'll be able to split for a DW just yet.

Takin' your time

Please, take your time when buying a cable hat. Their is not much price difference between the dw's and any of the others. Don't misunderstand, I'm not of the attitude that if you don't dw's, you don't have anything. That's crap. The only dw parts on my set are the hi-hats. They really are just a better designed tool. I paid $200.00 each for my 9500 series at GC. Thats pretty competitive with anybody else's unit.

Re: Standard hi-hat or cable hi-hat??

i'm bumping this because i'm looking into a cable hat setup and this thread is old.

maybe there's new brands/models, that are good for the price? the DW i looked into, that everyone says is the best, is pretty durned pricey. obviously i want the best one but i'd rather not spend over 250, i think the DW is right at that... a fella at GC said they run... 290? and he also said the DW 9k? is the best.

anyone besides upstroke have experience with several brands of them? i would only use a short cable on mine. thx in advance~

I have since bought a secondhand pearl unit and it's been great. Yes it's slightly sluggish compared to a straight setup but I barely notice it. I don't think it'd be a problem unless you're getting into some really gnarly feet action.
