While we're on the subject, I just put my Remo pinstripe heads on (11", 12", 13" &16" w/ the14" Powerstroke 3 coated snare). I noticed a significant change in the 'attack' sound. Moderate but pretty much what I was looking for. As for the 16"... WOW. A total fat sound with fast decay and absolutely no overtone. One thing that I'm not impressed with (so far) is the Powerstroke 3 snare. Like mentioned above, trial and error with sounds. Gonna have to do some more 'tweaking' on the snare head. Other than that, I love my Remo pinstripes.
Here is something a friend of mine did. He plays in a local band and has been drumming for many years. He had great sound with his kit and had it for a long time. He wanted a 'fatter, no decay, heavy' sound. He took the heads off and lined the shells with the foam egg carton stuff that you would put on a bed. Just once around each shell. I havn't heard it yet but he loves it. He said that it's a truly fat, absolutely no overtone sound. But that all comes down to personal preference. Not so sure that I want to hot glue anything to the inside of my shells. So now I'm just waiting for my cymbals. I settled on Sabian. My kit originally came with cheap 'stamped' cymbals. Great for a start up kit and my 5y/o daughter likes the sound. I may keep them on the set just for her (along with the new Sabians). My 10y/o son likes the sound of the hi-hats. They CAN'T stay. Better sounding hi-hats is what I need.
As always, stay safe and PEACE OUT!

Im wit' da Mouse!

I'm with the Mouse. NO mufle rings. Go stand in front of your set while some one else plays them.---DEAD. No projection, no real tone just different "thumps". I'm also with Mouse on the tuning dial. I have a brand new one still in the box if someone is interested. $49.95 That sounded like a good number off the top of my head. It has been used ONCE. I find that (like Mouse), I do much better tuning by ear. I do it a little different. To start out, I very lightly put a finger on the bottom head. Then I tap about an inch or so from the rim, in front of each lug with the stick. That way I am only hearing the head that I'm tapping on, not the entire drum. This evens out the tuning all around the head. Then I go back without the finger and tune with the resonance of the drum included. Works well for me.

Pro drummers who prefer a more focussed sound, usually tend to get thicker shells. I think Danny Careys are like 14mm or something stupid. Proper tuning will help eliminate the bad tones and keep the good ones. Muffling just removes all the tones.

I had a teacher who was a drummer once. I asked him to tune the school snare for me as I wasn't good at it at the time. He promptly gaffer taped a block of foam to the head and said "done". I still sounded like crap, but now it sounded like quieter crap. I promptly removed it and went back to trying to tune the thing.

I'll admit, I'm looking to purchase a pro-m kit in the future. These are some of the thinest maple shells on the market and are probably gonna give me a lot of overtones. I may need to go with some more focussed skins like g2 coated or even ec2s. I just hope these don't go dead as quickly as my pinstripes used to.
