Comparing drumsets

Ive had a Tama swingstar for a few years since i started playing. Ive never thought to upgrade because i thought mine was good enough. My band started playing at the local bar and i think its time to unload some cash for a new set.

I decided on the price and model but can't decide between what brands. All of these are about what im looking for:

Tama starclassic
Yamaha custom
Pearl masters
(maybe ludwig classic or vintage but i dont know much about them)

there all between $1000 and $1700 i think and cant decide wich i want. Any oopinions or suggestions?

A hunting we will go---

Can you get to a music store with a decent inventory? Maybe a Guitar Center where they have several brands set up and in stock. Nothing beats hearing a set live. When you find a brand or two that you like, have someone else play while you stand out front and listen to them. If needed, go to a dozen different music stores to find the right ones. Take no advice on this brand or that brand. Like cymbals, trust your ears to tell you what you like. Most of all, be patient. You have a set now, so you're not desperate.
Enjoy the hunt. Like a wife, take your time, you're going to live together a long time.

Send a message via AIM to AJChxc
also try to get out to small, intimite shows where you can actually talk to the bands. that way you A) can here the set live and B) here it straight from someone who owns it and isn't a salesman

Thas' good--Thas' REALLY good

That last post was probably the best advice so far. You get to hear different brands of drums. Meet new musicians. And - best of all-No salesman in your other ear doing his yammering routine. Every drummer you talk to will have his favorite brand. That's fine. It doesn't matter. Your ears are the real reason that you are there. Just enjoy the atmosphere and the conversation.
(When no ones looking--You can listen all you want)

In my opinion if you can get a masters 'MSX' you will be very very happy..
each kit sounds different but I like pearl for the overall feel of the drums and hardware.
