Question Wood type in the TAMA Rockstar-pro

So I'm stepping up to a Yamaha custom nouveau, but I'm not sure what type of wood I should go with. I'm currently playing on a (don't laugh) TAMA Rockstar-pro. Does anyone have any idea what kind of wood it's made of? I don't want a shock in sound due to change of makeup, so I'm looking for the same wood since Yamaha Customs have a selection of woods.

Explains sooo much!

I just found out that they're made of "Basswood". I believe it's the wood version of "corintian leather". Otherwise known as CRAP!

Hey, I had a set of old Rockstars, and I thought that they sounded great. My mapex's are better, but theres nothing wrong with starting out on Rockstars.

On another note...LUCKY!

I like maple myself.

Nah, foxy's right. They're crap. I've got a rockstar tom in the midst of my setup and it sounds deadened and lifeless.

Make sure you go and test all kits you're interested in to ensure you get what you realy want. If you like more focused, bassy sound I'd suggest birchwood.

anyone know about maple basswood? lol, cause I guess that's what my sonor kit is made of. Iono, I don't link it sounds bad by any stretch. New heads, some coated ones I think and the tone'll be more defined but other than that I think they fine.

What you've got is a mix. Probably outer layers maple and inner Basswood. This could've been done for price reasons or to attain a particular tone.

It's entirely up to the individual, but basswood is cheap material that in my opinion, looses far too much attack.

Rockstar were always based on phil. mahogany shell with an inner ply of basswood and maybe an outter ply of birch on Rockstar custom DX.

Phil. Mahogany has a sound characteristic toward the Birch but warmer.
