Stave drum option

I've been looking into stave type drums and wonder if any of you out there play on them. It looks like a nice way to get a custum set of drums. I will buy bare shells and finish them myself. I am leaning toward the cherry shell in a 14 x 7 for the snare but would like to here from others on the type of wood snares and their sound. For the kick I will go with an 22 x 18, toms will be 8,10,12and 14 with a possible addition of another 14 or a 16. I'm not sure if I will use cherry or another wood for these.
I am learning more about these and find I like the idea of this way but its difficult to find these to play on. Could use some input.
Thanks.

never heard of the brand actually. My shells in my sonor kit are maple and I think are birch mix.

I've looked a Sonor. They are a laminate shell. Very nice kits. Stave is a process of manufacture not a brand name. Thanks for the reply.

I would ad a 16" adds more of a deeper flavor...

Good call Guss, you may not need one now ( 16") but in the future you may. Hard to find matching orphans (from experience) later.

Here is a good description of stave drums.

I don't think that reducing the glue content is that critical as they say in their spiel, but could well be wrong. I guess you would have to do a comparison between differently manufactured drums.

Probally the most important thing that will affect the sound is going to be the bearing edges angle of cut and evenness and the drum head fitted to the drum.

Hardware, shell finish, and wood type secondary

Hiya Lumpy. Sounds like quite a project, but worthwhile.

I'd deffinately go with the "16 also, Hell, I'd use an 18 if I could be bothered lugging it around.

You may want to try out a variety of snares before settling on the "7 depth. A thinner snare would give you more crack and being wood, it sould still sound nice and smooth.

Gibralter is great for hardware. You could everything you need for those shells online.

Let us know how you go.

Ive finaly tuned my 13" tom(sounds more like a 14", because of my old 13" tom, my first) it gose 10", 12", 14", 13", and 16" it sound wonderfull, my personal prefrance is i cant live with my 16" not just for metal but for any type of music.

Thanks for the input. I may add another tom later but for now I'll stick with the smaller tom and tune it for what I want. The kit will stay in my studio so moving it is not a concern. I'm trying out a lot of snares to find the right sound for me and I'll build from there. I'm finding I like the jazz sound more and more. Cymbals are another subject for later. As for hardware the RIMS mounts seem to be the popular way to go. Thanks again
