Help! Input needed.

Yo drummers! Need some input here. I'm getting a new set by the end of the summer and have about $700-800.00 to spend (wife put a limit on it). I'd like good, durable shells and can settle for a 16lug kick bass. I was looking at the Pearl Export, Ludwig and Tama. Also need some input on the heads. I currently use Remo clear pinstripe with a Powerstroke 3 snare head. I like Remo pinstripes but I'm not all that happy with the Powerstroke 3 snare head. Too 'studio' for me. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Any and all input is welcome.
Thanx!

Todd

I have a set of exports and they respond very very well to EC2 evans, genera dry snare with a hazy 300 on the reso... only kick heads to use G3 both sides....

Exports aren't bad, but remember, unless your buying the new export maple, they will still only sound as good as the forum. My advice on intermediate pearl kits, have a look at the new vision series and the export maple.

I also totally agree about the Gretsch, probably a better intermediate kit than any pearls.

I use evans coated reverse power dot on my snare and I love it. Gonna try out the dry next time though.

Thanx for the input! I was talking to my friend who plays in a band and uses Pearl Export and he said the same thing with regards to sounding like the Forum series. I'm down to the Gretsch and the Pearl Vison series. Gonna keep the Remo pinstripes that I presently have. I'll just have to wait and see what the snare sounds like when I get it.

I almost bought the EXR and then the Vision..Then I played a set of pdp's X7's
poplar shells like the EX's. The bearing edges on these (pdp's) are cut so nicely and the build quality A-1!! I bought 'em. check out their web page. Pacific is dw's little brother..believe me it shows! I swapped out the stock heads for an Evans EMAD on the kick drum and EC2's on the toms. They compare favorably to the Visions. They have a real nice high end attack and low end presence..alot like birch! The kick drum is absolutely amazing! They are right in your price range and it's a 7 pc! I got 'em in orange sparkle lacquer. I have been trying to upload pics unsucessfully Go ahead and compare them to the Gretsch and Pearl Visions. Good luck!

Re: Help! Input needed.

yeah i definetly agree.

go with pdp.

the AX7 sounds really really good for the price they have it up at.

and plus u have more options of changing the set up if you dont like something.

dont go with exports. pearl = bleh.

i had a choice between pearl EXR or pdp Fs birch.

the pdp definetly got me.

Well, The Gretsch's sound good..and I had spent some time combing thru a couple of kits G.C. had in the showroom. I found the build quality on the Gretsch Catalinas to be lower than that of the pdps and Pearl Visions. The cnc work (lug and tom mount holes) on the Gretsch Cat. Kick drum(s) were IMO poorly drilled. There were chips of maple ply flaking from around some of the holes and there were a few issues with loose hardware (lugs and bass drum tom mount) This is just a minor annoyance and it's something I will check for on any kit at head change time. I also found the kick drum mounted double tom mount to be a bit wimpy.. Take into consideration that these are just my observations. I do "go through" a shell pack before I will consider whether to buy it or not. The most important factor is sound. The Cats. do sound nice. To me.. the pdp's got 'em beat
in sound, build quality and value. I am not knocking Gretsch. If you are going to opt for them., I'd save my money and go for the Renouns. They are fine drums!
Peace
