electronic set for practice

i was originally a person who thought electronic drums were evil, but living in an apartment i figure it's my best option for practicing and not having my neighbors kill me.

So....

if i'm only going to be practicing on it does it really need to be a name brand model? what should i look for? i've seen a lot of crappy looking kits on ebay for cheap.

my funds are tight so the eventual purchase of another accoustic kit is the goal but it's not going to happen anytime soon. so other than sounding fake, what are some thoughts on electric sets for playing out in small stages? how to you amp it?

suggest something, i don't know where to start.

It all depends on how in-depth your practice is. We don't get many brands down under, but I've tried out Legend, Yamaha and Roland and here's my verdict.

Roland, Top 'o da line so it's probably more money than you wanna spend on a practice kit.

Legend, can hold a beat but, their brains are not too good. Try to do a fast roll and the damn thing can't keep up. They're real cheap so maybe you'd like to turn it on for beat work, and just use the pads for stick work.

Yamaha. The cheapest set DTX-plorer III, is a good little set. Doesn't have all the features of a roland, but it can keep up with you and it's got everything you need to get going. From there it's all the same as roland.

Good luck. Tell us how you go.
