deciding on a set

i Have 900-1000 bux to spend on a set and cymbals.
ive basically decided on the paiste 201 cymbal pack (ride, crash, hi hat) which comes out to 200-215 dollars.

any suggestions on drum sets in the 600-800 dollar price range for a second yr drummer? I'm looking for a basic 5 piece set (snare, 2 mounted toms, floor tom and bass drum) that comes with the hardware needed for the snare, as well as the cymbals...

ne suggestions are welcome
-Jon

Iono, those would be the sets I'd look at myself. Justr to recommend soem otehr cymbals about teh same price... Meinl MCS, k that's about the only ones lol. There's the sabian b8's I guess and zildjian zbts's but eh'. That hats are nice for teh B8's and teh ride isn't bad IMO, but I don't care for the crash. ZBT's are a decent pack for starting but yea, I don't really care for them a whole lot. I love my xs20's though

I bought a Gretsch Catalina Kit that is in that price range that I'm pretty happy with I would check those out also.

Well you said you were going to spend 200 on cymbals, and thats bad. I would recoment that you put about 400-500 on cymbals because you can always tune a drum to sound good or buy some good heads, but you cant really tune cymbals. As far as a it, i would go with something like a yamaha rydeen or maybe a ludwig accent CS custom. The ludwig is all birch shells and sings beautifully. That is th kit that i use and i have absolutly no problems with it.

I would have to agree with Rockjazz that investing more in the cymbals upfront, even if it means buying slightly cheaper shells and hardware, may make you happier with our sound. There are very few kits that can't be made to sound decent with good heads and proper tuning, but once you buy a cymbal you're stuck with it as is.

I think you should spend more like 500 on cymbals, because you can always get a good set for a good price. Cymbal prices are pretty steady.

Re: deciding on a set

About two years ago our church purchased a Rogers maple set around $550 range. I've found them to be reliable, good hardware, and adequate sound. Also bought hard shell cases for traveling. A good investment. joyful_noise

I'd have to second the post on the Gretsch Catalina 6 piece set from Sigler Music. Comes with throne and all hardware needed for $699 + 60 shp. A pic is my avatar. Love the feel and sound

Re: deciding on a set

You should check out musiciansfriend.com They have great deals in thier scratch and dent section. I just bought a Mapex Mbirch series kit that goes for over $1200 for a little over $800.
I can't find anything wrong with it and they sound great! Good luck!
