Bass Drum

Hey Everyone!

I'm looking at upgrading my Bass drum to something a bit bigger ( I currently am only using a 20x18" Mapex VX series) and a bit better. I play mainly metal, so something larger is what I'm looking for (I assume).

The thing is, I don't actually know anything about the difference in sound different types of wood will make, so if someone could please give me just a brief overview of how things work, or a link to a site that would be great.

Do most stores sell bass drums separately or do I have to buy the whole kit? I don't really have the money to buy a whole new kit and would prefer to buy just the bass drum. Would have a bass drum of a different brand or series tot he rest of my kit be okay, or will it sound weird?

Thanks for any replies given!

Re: Bass Drum

What Kind of kit is the rest of your set? I would try to match the set as much as possible, if your Toms are Maple I would try for maple, etc. If you order from the same company as the rest of your kit you should be able to get the best match for looks and sound.

This idea interests me muchly. I just have no idea where to start at all, if anyone could direct me to a tutorial of some sort, a DVD to buy a website or whatever. After a search I've found a few good sites for materials, just have no idea where to go from here.
