Hey bro, Yeah I had been looking at the birch/basswood mix shell kits, like the TAMA s.stars, Pearl visions etc. I like the sound that birch shells create. I spent literally hour after hour setting up and tearing down kit after kit, playing them side by side., comparing toms, kicks, and stocker snares. I put all this stuff through the ringer (my local G.C is cool like that.) It came down to The Pearl Visions, Gretsch catalina birch and PDP X7's The pearls were nice. Nice sound, nice build quality..just good I guess..nothing too earth shattering here though. The Gretsch cat. birchs were a bit nicer still..all birch shells, Wimpy bass drum tom mount.and unfortunately not so great build quality. Then the PDP's Right off the bat, these drums sang even with the stock remo heads! The finish on this series of drums is stunning!(lacquer btw) the chroming on the shell hardware is beautiful. Everything about the shell hardware including the suspension mounts (dw style) was flawless! You can really see dw's influence here. Now the shells:
the bearing edges on all the drums are sharp and nicely cut. The shell interiors are very nice, not a screw or washer missing..eveything aligned perfectly. Just really nice! The sound? AWESOME. Gobs of high end attack and low end presence. Like an all birch kit! These shells are made of poplar hardwood. Not hybrid this and that. I spoke to a dw rep that was in the store. He confirmed this.
It's all in the build man! PDP is dw's little brother, so their attention to detail is first rate all the way!http:// I don't at this time have any sound bites on this kit. I can tell you that after the head swap to Evans EMAD for the kick and EC2's on all the toms..these drums are a monster!

Re: Starclassic or Superstar?

Definitley seems to be a overall nice set. The finishes are beautiful, the hardware seems decent, but the one thing I noticed is that there are no toms that you can buy seperately. That's one of the only down falls the kit has IMO. This drumset is cheaper than a Superstar Custom, but the ability to add on is a big thing to me. It's not to say I couldn't get toms from another series but I'd rather they match.

The reason I asked what the hybrid hardwood was, because of the listing in musicians friend. It never gave an exact wood type but i checked out the Pacific site after you told me they were poplar. Thanks for the help!

Yeah., I guess for me, for 7 bills you get a pro sounding and pro looking, 7 pc. shell pack with dw quality IMO there's really no need to add on to this kit.., but I guess it would be nice if PDP had the option. It's a new series this year..there may be add ons to come? Before I got these tubs, I'd been playing Pearl drums for years. I just went with what sounded best to me. This kit RAWKS!!! good luck in your search! Let us know what you end up with.

Re: Starclassic or Superstar?

The decision has been made! I ordered the 2007 Tama Superstar in Brushed Metallic Black (Shell pack). I think it looks sweet and played the kit (not the exact kit) and wow.....well worth the money. The new Starcast system looks amazing. It only ran me $599.

It's going to take about a month to receive it, because they just came out with the updated version at the NAMM convention this past summer and have just started mass production on them. The newer versions have the new starcast system and new wrap styles other than that you still get the diecast hoops and birch shells with a basswood inner ply that came on prior models.

The only downfall is that they don't have add on toms for this set yet. I was glad to hear that they will be available in the next few months. Gives me time to save up for a nice new snare, rack, cymbals, and a replacement floor tom for my Swingstar.

woohoo for new drumkits!
