Starclassic or Superstar?

I was told by Skinslapper that it was time to upgrade to a better set. His comment sat in my head for probably the past 4 months eating at me. Now, don't get me wrong I love my tama swingstars "Stop laughing!!!"......but he's right. I'm now torn between the Tama Starclassic birch kit (red sparkle fade), or the Tama Superstar kit which is made of Birch with basswood inner plys and slightly cheaper. I'm gonna buy the set within the next two to three months..hopefully.

I got a chance to look at both of their features and hear how they sounded and it's still a tough decision.

This is going to be the last kit I purchase ( I will add on ).......unless I come into some giant cash flow, then I'm gonna get a starclassic bubinga kit....or the warlord.

So help make up my mind Starclassic or Superstar. Keep in mind I'm not playing in a band. What do you think would be best given my situation?

Any opinion is welcome.

Dude, I wasn't trying to ragg on your current kit. It was just that the dream kit on your space was only a swingstar, you know dream for the skies.

Anywho, I know you're a Tama nut, but have you really done your homework and tried out some other brands? Don't get me wrong Tama's the shizz, but I feel there are a lot more kits out there with all same features for less cost. I.e: Pearl Vision (birch and basswood), Mapex pro-m birch (huge selection and free tom), Gretsch catalina birch.

Just a thought. Other than that, I'm a maple man. If it ain't redwood, you can keep it.

I know you weren't ramaking fun of my dream set (It wasn't meant to be a swingstar anyway) haha. I just agree with you. I have looked at other options like Pacific, Mapex, Pearl, and Taye. The Pacific drums were nice and cheap for the what the drums were made of, but I just love the sound of Tama's drums.

Fair enough, wel I don't know what their size selection is like, but if the promo shots are anything to go by, Perhaps you'd be happier with the starclassics deeper shells, for that long "Lombardo" boom. The Superstars seem to be pushing the fast tom size.

Re: Starclassic or Superstar?

Yeah, they don't have much resonance. That's what I like though. You may have seen the Superstar Custom hyperdrive series. I'm interested in those too.

You can get the Superstar in a standard size. The series has just as wide a selection as any other.

I think I'll get the Superstar for now, but later on once I buy my own house and make more than $10 an hr I'll kick it up a notch to the Starclassic haha.

The Mapex M looks really nice especially with the forest green finish. little bit more than the Superstar though. I also took a harder look at the Pacific drums found a 7 piece, but it's "hybrid hardwood"....kinda made me want to steer away. Then i saw the 5 piece maple kit, but the toms are smaller than a standard set but was right around the price range i was looking at. I'll have to make a trip to guitar center and see if they have the pacific maple set in.

Dude, there are better sounding sets out there. I'd seriously play on as many sets you can possibly play on to get a feel for them.

Re: Starclassic or Superstar?

i think I've already made up my mind on the Superstar for now. I tried the Pearl Vision and it was ok IMO. I got a chance to try that Pacific too, but it was not to my taste in sound. Keep in mind I am on a tight budget so the Superstar will do for now.

Re: Starclassic or Superstar?

I like the look of those alot, but have not had a chance to hear them without about 30 other people beating on other drums. Do you have a video or soundclip of you playing? If you can, can you please tell me what the hybrid hardwood is?
