Re: What brand kit do you play and why?

I started playing in the 60's and went through several used kits by Gretsch & Slingerland until I bought a set of Premier's... I was hooked, I loved the sound of their birch shells. I was always an addict of the monster double bass kits too. After being sidelined and selling everything, and now not being able to afford my prized Premier's anymore I tried a set of HB's (go ahead... start laughing), I got the Predator Elite birch 12 pc and added 3 roto's to the order. The shells actually turned out to be pretty good, but the hardware and cymbals sucked. I am slowly modifying as my budget can afford replacing the tom arms with heavier duty Pearls, other hardware with Gibraltar, the cymbals with Zildjian A's and will soon be adding a Gigraltar rack... but I have my monster kit again for a fraction of the price. It will never replace my Premier's but I am happy with it. To me anyone with enough money can buy a major brand or custom kit, take it out of the box and play, others like me who are not afraid to modify end up with our own unique sets...

I play a RMV kit with bapeva shells. Bapeva is a dense Brazilian maple, and the sound from the thinner, denser shell is nothing short of amazing. The snare has a punchy crack with little or no overtone, while the bass is a solid thump - it even sounds good unmuffled. Toms are bright and cutting, and offer good tuning flexibility. Heads are Evans batters with the supplied Remo resos. Kit's comprised of a 22x18 bass, 14x5 snare, 8, 10 12 rack toms, 14 suspended floor and 16 standard floor toms. The hardware is anodized black, and the nutboxes are carbon fibre over metal. I got it for a song as they were being promoted by the Italian importer at the time! No photos available yet

Re: What brand kit do you play and why?

I like my Taye Gokit for small jazz things--sound good and easy to cart around.
I use my Force 2000 for rock stuff and I like my RMV (what Bambam said) for bigband. I have an early '80s supraphonic that I like for most stuff (I don't have an RMV snare and the Force 2000 snare isn't so hot). For practice, I do most stuff on my Hart Gigapro with Roland mod. I can get so many sounds and the kits sound great and my family doesn't have to endure the noise. I actually have everything I've ever bought with the exception of hardware that's fallen apart over the years. I still have a no-name kit I bought in 8th grade that kept me going for quite a few years and the A Zildjians are worth much more than I paid for the whole kit. I've been fortunate to have gotten good deals on everything.

I play a Pacific dw "fs" birch set. They sound very good with evans G2 heads on them. I use Sabin cymbals X20s. and some b8s as well. My drum pedals are dw 7000 double bass. Very nice looking set with the red satin finish.

Re: What brand kit do you play and why?

I started playing an old Westbury set i bought off my friend a few years back. As i started learning more about brands and hardware, and gradually got more into playing, I wanted a new set. I recently bought a Ludwig Accent CS Custom Series kit with birch shells. I was going to get an Export, but I liked the ludwig sound more. I just got Gibraltar Avenger 2 double bass pedals too. My cymbals are a Zildjian A custom crash, Sabain AA Metal-X ride, Zildjian oriental china, and a few other B8's I occasionaly use. Oh and i use Sabian B8 Pro's 14'' hats.

Re: What brand kit do you play and why?

I started playing again in 2001. No set for over 20 years. But, I was given a set for Christmas 2006 and have been trying to pick it up again. Now, I play my Enforcer set. The good thing about it is the snare has a decent warm sound. I did not have a set for over 20years before this one. In my teens and twenties I played Slingerland. For some reason, my father bought it for a graduation present... I had that set for over 10years and basically destroyed it. I left it in the basement of my church and lost track of it. If I had the money I'd buy DW or Gretch... I always liked the sound of Gretch, real musical.
