Talking Re: What brand kit do you play and why?

Originally a 5 pc 1984 Tama Swingstar #3.
Link:Tama History

Modified with 10" and 14" hanging toms.

Makes it 10", 12", 13", 14", 16" toms, 24" kick, 14" snare.
14" Zildjian New Beat Hats, 16" Sabian B8 Medium Crash, 10" Sabian B8 splash, 16" Zildjian Thin Crash, 20" Sabian B8 Ride.

Snare positioned between the 10 and 12 for comfort, and multiple hit area placement and close to hihats for my music styles.
Have since eliminated 2 cymbal stands and put everything but the 12 and 13 on a Gibraltar Rack.
Easier to setup and tear down. And also load in my van.

This all fits nicely on a 4' x 6' rug.

Re: What brand kit do you play and why?

Well the first kit the church bought was a C.B 700 since they did not have a drummer before me it was ok.Then God showed me once i joined my church what kit to buy,I saw a seven piece kit,so i did my research for months and i came up with Tama, but when i went to The drum store i was sold on taye drums after i played on a Taye kit.I got the same Quality i would get paying around $2,000.00 dollars. So i went to the church and fought for months
and gave info and prayed and ended up a week ago with the tour pro Taye kit five piece, but
i have all the pieces to add more toms,so i am sold on Taye's . The sound is so great and everyone is happy so now i will be adding more over time.Taye's are the way to go if you don't have a lot of money, but want a kit that is equal or better than the top line of other brands Go Taye.

Yeah Taye does look to be a good quality drumset, Ayote are deffinately one of the greats, so anything they make on the side is gonna be good. Unfortunately living down here in Oz, don't get a chance to try any of them.

Yamaha (current) Stage Custom Advantage Noveau 6pc single bass (2bl pedal)
Yamaha (previous) Recording Custom 1980's 7 pc 2-24 bd kit wow that cranked
Ludwig, Tama, Pearl and a mix as a newbie. My favs were the recording customs, sold them in 1986 when I needed to get a real job..........The sound of birch was awesome. I recorded with them at Normandy sound in RI and the tech had them up and ready to record in less than 20 minutes. He was amazed at the sound quality. Thats why! Paiste as well, 2002's exclusively then, now a mix of Paiste.

Re: What brand kit do you play and why?

My first kit was a verve percussion set. It sucked, and I put remo pinstripes and a powerstroke 3 head on it. Sounded decent. I had to sell it after noise complaints at my apartment complex. I then bought a roland td-3 electronic kit. Now I live in a duplex, and I'm thinking of buying a gretsch. I miss the acoustic sound and feel.

Re: What brand kit do you play and why?

GRETSCH
The following are my reasons...........it's riviting reading by the way!
I started playing when I was about 13 yrs old. I bought a $300 (new) Japanese kit at 16 yrs old and a new Gretsch kit at 20 in 1969. I sold the Gretsch (sad to say) in 1976 and quit playing until last year. May 10th 2007 I ordered a Gretsch Renown Purewood African Mahogany shellpack - 6pc. It arrived Aug 25th and I started my drumming journey again.
I bought Gretsch for two reasons:
1) When I was looking around for drums last year I checked out a lot of kits and did a lot of reading, adverts etc. To me, anyway, the Gretsch drums looked and sounded as nice as any of the top-line drums.
2) Plain old nostalgia - I have some great memories associated with playing my first Gretsch kit.

OTHER DRUMS:
This week I bought a Premier Signia Marquis 14x5.5 snare
A few months ago I added a DW Collector's Series snare to my kit (Black Oyster Glass - It's really sparkly - oh, and it sounds nice too).
I also have a Gretsch Blackhawk Mighty Mini 10x6 snare - love it!

I'm liking all the drums I have so far...............

I also play congas and own a full set of Valje's. I bought them new in 1976 from Ray Ayotte when he had Drums Only! on Kingsway in Vancouver, BC.

I might add that I tried some Taye drums before I decided on Gretsch and I almost bought them. As far as sounding and lookin nice goes I think I could have bought DW, Yamaha, Pearl, Taye or Sonor (all of which I looked at) and been happy with any of them. Actually, Mapex are great too.
Maybe I'll just have to get one of each............

Cheers,

Kona
