Re: What brand kit do you play and why? I recently purchased a set of Yamaha Absolute Maple Customs. This includes one 16X18 bass drum, one Yamaha Absolute Maple Custom snare drum, two rack mount toms (10" and 12") and one 14X14 floor tom. I have one set of 13" Zildjian Master Sound hi hats and here is my piece de resistance.......my cymbal set up of which I am proud and with what I am in much love.....
One set of 13" Zildjian Master Sound Hi Hats
One 22" Zildjian Hi Definition Ride Cymbal
One 22" Zildjian Constantinople Medium Thin Low Ride Cymbal
One 21" Zildjian Sweet Ride Cymbal
One 18" Zildjian Crash
One 16" Zildjian Crash
One 10" Paiste Splash
The Sweet Ride is great for crashing as are the Hi Def and the Constantinople.
I love my cymbals forever man!
Why Yamaha? I hate to say it but I must be honest.....because Antonio Sanchez, Peter Erskine, and Dafnis Prieto all use the exact same brand, make, and models and I love each of their sounds. I figure if I can work with them, I can approach the same quality of sound they achieve on their sets. At least if they ever sound bad, I can certainly say that it's not the drums but the drummer (speaking of me of course).
I am about to rent a rehearsal space for a couple of months so that I can shed uninhibitedly (one of the greatest challenges of being a drummer is being able to practice without the complaints of the neighbors or roomates). |

Here's a pix of mine....
This pix shows them with EC2's that the guy from GC liked. I like them a little less subdued. | I've played on this kit before. Very solid. I play a Pearl Session set 5 piece broken down to a 3 piece. I play Pearl due to the punchy sound out of the kick and toms. It also suits my style of play which is everything =) |

Re: What brand kit do you play and why? Hi,
Newbie here at this forum.
I play Yamaha drums. I play 3 kits and they are.
1, Yamaha Club Custom Birch/Mahogany with 20" kick (circa 1990)
2, Yamaha Absolute kit, 22"maple bass, 10' birch tom, 13" beech tom, and a 16"birch tom. (1997)
3, Yamaha Oak Custom drums. 22" bass, 10" tom, 12"tom, 14" tom. Great drums at a great price.
I think for the money Yamaha is right up there with the best of them. The craftsmanship is great. I love the YESS mounting system it's so easy to setup your kit.
The drums tuned properly sound great. Just look at their artists roster. |

I am with you in that I am thrilled with my Yamahas. When I bought my set, I was (still am) determined to bust my cherry on jazz. I am 54 yrs. old and even though that doesn't necessarily mean I can't play any other type of music, I envision myself spending my retirement years playing jazz with friends in maybe a house type gig or around town. Right now I feel so far from it because I haven't found the cats with whom to play yet but I am faithfully practicing my drums, learning the language of jazz the best I can.
My set up is :
1 10" rack mount tom
1 12" rack mount tom
1 14"X14" floor tom
1 16"X18" bass drum
1 13" Zildjian Master Sound Hi Hats
1 22" Zildjian K Constantinople Medium Thin Lo Ride
1 21" Zildjian Sweet Ride
1 22" Zildjian Hi Definition Ride
1 18" Zildjian Crash
1 16" Zildlian Crash
I feel that I have my range of cymbals covered. I love the way they all sound in concert with one another. They really match each other very well, carrying higher and lower tones and everything else in between.
I am about to put some Earthtone goat skin heads on the the drums because I've heard awesome incredible things about them. Ever heard of them? comments......?
Suggestions on other avenues besides playing to records (cd's) for becoming the master of the drums I so desire to be? I am a willing student believe me!
Oh, I almost forgot.........my snare drum is a Yamaha Absolute Custom Maple Snare 14X5.5, the best snare drum I've ever owned! |

Re: What brand kit do you play and why? Hi,
I'm 54 too, small world. I am gigging in an oldies band. 50's & 60's music. It's fun but not all that challenging. We play about 120 gigs per year and we open up for some pretty good acts here in the Boston area.
I am using mostly Zildjian cymbals, mostly the K series but I do use an A effects cymbal which I love, and also an older Paiste 602 formula 17" crash which is the b%$s.
For my practice I have a pretty good collection of music minus drums that I play through keyboard amp with a 15" speaker and a horn and it's lots of fun. Everything from jazz, rock, fusion, Latin.
I have not heard of the earth heads? Who makes them and what sound are going for? Like the calfskin?
Nice chatting with you.

Re: What brand kit do you play and why? BTW, Yamaha, because as I believe after playing, Ludwig, Tama, Slingerland, Gretsch and Yamaha, there is no comparison, at least for me. Paiste as well.
