Re: What brand kit do you play and why?

I have a Gretsch Catalina Birch 5 piece fusion Kit. I play it for the following reasons:
1) I liked the sound of the kit when I sat down behind it in the store and still do.
2) It was in my price range.
3) Gretsch has a good reputation in the drumming community.
4) I wanted the fusion size kit, for more of a jazz sound, but I wanted a full size bass drum, for the bottom end.
5) It was a big step up from my first Kit a CB percussion set, that was great for a beginner on a budget, but didn't cut it as I advanced.

Re: What brand kit do you play and why?

I play a pearl export ex circa '98. I bought it because it was the best I could afford at the time and I wasn't knowledgable about wood types and sounds.

Don't get me wrong, she is a good kit. One of her better features is the full length lugs on all drums. Even if that doesn't help keep tension off the shell, it still looks cool.

One large crappy feature is the lack of ISS on the toms. They made that standard only a few months after I bought this kit, so I felt pretty jacked off about it.

Prior to that, I played tama swingstar (good, solid kit) and a power beat four peice (everyone's gotta start somewhere).

Next purchase will something in a cheap maple. Leaning towards sonor 3007 at the mo'.

If you haven't, try a set of Maple Ddrums. I put Remo pins on them and wow. Superkick II on the 20X20 bass and you could be busted for carrying a cannon.

Here's a pix of mine....

This pix shows them with EC2's that the guy from GC liked. I like them a little less subdued.

I play a Dynamic kit because it's affordable, andfor themost part you can get some good tones out of it. As it stands now though my dream kit would be a nice Tama set.

Cool Re: What brand kit do you play and why?

I play a Mapex M-Birch. The outter shell has a maple ply over birch plys. I get some really nice tones, depth, and warmth out of them. I am able to get pretty close to reproducing the tones you'd get from an all maple shell. I have factory heads on the kit now, but aim to re-skin the set with remo pin-stripes in order to attempt to get even closer to that maple sound.

I really like my Mapex set because of the sounds I am able to reproduce, the type of mounts used for the toms (rim mounts), and the tom stands and mounts themselves. The hardware is very durable and versatile. I can position everything within the perfect striking distance and angle. The finish is a laquered finish and virtually flawless. I have no problem with taking this kit out for shows (whenever I might get one).

I started out playing on Ludwigs, but I really like this Mapex kit I have. My dream kit would be an all maple DW.

Yeah the mapex's did look nice. I would think if you wanted to get a more maple sound, you would want more open heads as birch is more focused than maple.
