Hi Pillowpants12,
I would not start with a 5 piece, (depends on the deal ofcourse) A 4 piece for someone who has never played the drums before is alllready quite a task!
The old fashioned school would start novice drummers off on only a snare playing rudiments.
Whatever you buy, do not buy crap! You will have an uphill battle because crappy sounding drums and cymbals

will kill any inspiration.
So less items of better quality is the way to go; then it is soh easy just to extend in the same range bit by bit.
A second hand good midrange Tama kit is not going to break the bank, and get a Paiste PST 5 pack for cymbals, the best cymbals e v e r for the money you pay. (check on the web what drummers think of those!)
Of course you can get lucky with second hand cymbals, but the problem is when you start drumming for the first time you do not know what decent cymbals would sound like.
Anyway good luck and happy drumming,
Harry
