I am looking at getting an electric kit to complement my acoustic playing and am woundering about the quality of the cheaper brands ( as there are plenty of reviews of the leading brands) particularly the alesis kits - I am concerned about longevity of the computer components and the cost of replacement. so if anyone can help me out would be great. Also what are the pros and cons of the rubber verse web verse standard heads/pads?

Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated

Roland from everything I've read seems to be the cadillac of Electronic kits, but in a band I'm in where I play bass, our drummer uses a Yamaha set, and it sounds great, and I've played it and like it. If you're looking at something in between Roland and Alessis I would check out the Yamaha kits.

I love my Harts with my Roland TD-12 module but I have an upper end kit. I'd stay away from the Roland HD-1 (pedals not adjustable nor realistic). In a lower price range I'd say Roland TD-6 or get a Yamaha. Definitely look for used as the Rolands retain their value pretty well but you'll still get a better deal than new.
If you're handy, you might consider an acoustic to electronic conversion. You could get a TD-6 module and some brand name E cymbals (they're more difficult than drums to convert) and do the drums really cheap (drum quality, bearing edges etc. don't matter).
