i have basically beat the crap out of the snare i am using now..i am looking to buy a new one..any suggestions?
my friend told me to get a piccolo snare..but idk

mapex black panther series sounds nice. I like my sonor force 3003 snare...think it's 9ply maple...forgot the dimensions though, not to big, but it cracks

Ok there are several factors in this. Money is one because the best snares are expensive though you might luck out on Ebay. Number 2 is, style you play. I like Bronze or brass snares myself. An excellent bronze or Brass snare is a The Mapex Brass Black Panthern. If you have a larger budget find you a Ludwig Black Beauty. I will have one soon since I played one and haven’t been happy with any other snare since. I have located a good used one that was used in a major recording session. Keep in mind also that a snare is only as good as you tune it. That comes with experience. Unless you have that experience, get someone that has a good reputation as a drum Tech.

Hi i have a really rattely snare at the moment and i was wondering about what makes a good snare. Because you can get all types of snares that are made of all different materials. So what kinds would you recomend for under 1000 dollars?

Good/Bad… guess it all depends on what you are looking for.
I had an old cheesy snare from a brand called DrumMate that was a 5.5x14. That snare was part of a 4 piece drum kit I picked up for $50 back in 1992. The bearing edges were not perfect but the snare sounded great. $$$ does not always equal a better snare for everyone. What you should do is familiarize yourself with drum characteristics and then visit some stores to test out a few snares. You may find that the perfect snare is small, or shallow, or whatever. What is making the snare you have not adequate? Is there some problem happening with it? Pieces do get lose over time, snare wires get bent or installed wrong, drum heads may be old, etc… Remember that snare I talked about above… it looked like hell but with a
little bit of care it sang so sweet.
