Good/Bad… guess it all depends on what you are looking for.
I had an old cheesy snare from a brand called DrumMate that was a 5.5x14. That snare was part of a 4 piece drum kit I picked up for $50 back in 1992. The bearing edges were not perfect but the snare sounded great. $$$ does not always equal a better snare for everyone. What you should do is familiarize yourself with drum characteristics and then visit some stores to test out a few snares. You may find that the perfect snare is small, or shallow, or whatever. I recommend reading the following information:
Drum Tuning Bible
What is making the snare you have not adequate? Is there some problem happening with it? Pieces do get lose over time, snare wires get bent or installed wrong, drum heads may be old, etc… Remember that snare I talked about above… it looked like hell but with a
little bit of care it sang so sweet.
