where to keep your drum kit?

I have a drum kit and a garage. My question is ... will the cold temperature hurt the drum kit? It is currently 48 degrees in there right now and I believe it might get just a little colder but not much. It is not damp at all actually quite dry. In the summer it gets a bit hot, 85-90, and still not that humid. Is this ok for the drum kit? If not what could I do to make that a more suitable place? Thank you for any help.

Cheers

If its too cold glue will come loose, and if it gets too hot it might crack the wood.
If you like to float your drum kit, it will expand.

Re: where to keep your drum kit?

The best environment for your kit is indoors... normal living space.
Temperature will cause damage over time... But just try to minimize the risk. If say the temperature were going to fluctuate daily 30-40 degrees and you keep your drum heads pretty tight under tension you might want to reconsider... or at least leave the hardware set up and bring the drums out as necessary.

Find some closet space to stack them... Stacking isn't the best thing for your drums or drum heads but it beats daily temperature raises/lowers.

Keeping them in a garage also increases risk of things crawling into your gear or inside of a shell... More dirt/dust.... Higher exposure to rust etc.... You run the risk of ruining your hardware as well.

I treat my drums like furniture... expose them to the elements at a minimum... Shoot I feel bad if they sit in the garage overnight from a gig and I am too tired to bring them in.

Re: where to keep your drum kit?

Thanks for all your input, it really helped. The temperature doesn't fluctuate that much at all. It would gradually heat or cool down with whatever the temperature is outside. As for it ruining the kit over time, I'm ok with that because this being my Sons first kit and having read more about drums, by the time we can get him something REALLY special I'll have the garage enclosed and fixed up. Thanks again for the input!

Would w/metal or acrylic shells be less of a headache if you didn't have a place other than an uninsulated garage to keep the kit set up ready for practice ?
