What type of set up is more popular?

I have 2 tom toms and 1 floor tom. You can see a pic in my signature. I want to know what type of set up is more popular: the way I have it set up in the picture with the 12" tom the ride then the 13" and the 16" toms on my right side. Or do more people like the 2 mounted toms on the bass drum mount and the floor tom on the floor with the ride over it? Im trying to decide, ive played with both but different people say different things. All i know is the way its set up now makes it look bigger =P

I'd probably prefer teh way you have it with one mounted on bass and the 13 and 16 on the floor.Nother way is mounting the 12 off of one of your cymbal stands left of the bass, mount the 13 on the left of the bass, have the ride on the right side/over teh bass and the 16 on floor. Or like you said, mount the 12 and 13 on the bass and 16 on the floor with ride over it, or over the 13. There's no wrong way to set it up, just whatever "feels" right to you.
btw, your facebook/picture link didn't work

I used to setup like that before I got a second floor tom. You'd be surprised how easy it is to adapt to new things. I now find my "13 a lot more playable in front of me rather than to the side.

Re: What type of set up is more popular?

The industry standard for quite some time has been a 12" and 13" tom mounted off the bass drum, 16" floor tom close by. Though with the changes in drums over the years and isolation mounts becomming more popular it is pretty much anything goes now. Shazaam said it right when the most important thing is if it "feels" right to you.

There is no right or wrong way to drums... If anything experiment and see what happens.

Yup, just expirement, but like skin said, you'll adapt to almost any setup you choose really. I just try do whatever looks best and uses the least amount of hardware :P

Re: What type of set up is more popular?

well I usually set my kit up so that my kick is free standing. My two smaller toms, in my case 12" and 12" tom will be floating on the left side with my snare in the middle and to my right, first my ride and then my 14" floating tom.

This works for me . . .

More people have the ride over or near the floor tom and thier other toms over the bass drum.
