Re: Snare Placement For me, I try to keep in mind what feels the most comfortable and most natural when reaching for toms. I always have the snare drum directly in front of me in a straight line of sight according to where I want to be facing(depending on whether I want to be facing the front man or the crowd), with the snare throw off centered between my legs closest to me(it makes it easier to throw the snares on or off while still keeping my legs moving playing the bass pedal(s) and hats). The small tom(10") is mounted right in line in front of the snare. And I usually have the near edge of that small toms top hoop at a level thats flush with the top of the far edge of the snares hoop.
Then just hold your sticks out and twist your body at the waist with your arms in as comfortable reach position and align the rest of the toms so you wont find yourself reaching for them in a manner that feels restrictive or at all uncomfortable.
As a side thought, if you play traditional grip or switch back and forth between matched grip and traditional grip, you might have to make some slight adjustments for that(in terms of location and tilt).
Dont forget, however you set it up... you can always change it.
