I'm actually doing the same soon here, but I'm going from a 6 to a 5. One good thing about removing that middle tom is being able to put your ride there. Leaves it a place that's real easy to reach, and gives good access to the bell. If my sig shows up in the post it has an overview of my kit that I made on
Sabian.com kit builder. Just imagine it without the far left and right toms.
Like CJDG said. If you have the right hardware you could also mount that middle tom on a stand to your right, and ditch the floor tom. Lots of possibilities. I bought a 40$ clamp from
Tama that can be used to mount a tom or a boom arm off of another cymbal stand, depending on what you stick on the end of it. I just took one of the tom mounts off the bass and used it in the clamp.
Going back to your basics is always good also. Having a simple 4 piece can take away the distractions of having all that stuff available and remind you how to be creative and use what you got behind the kit. If you get what I'm saying
