Looking for a first drum set

I've never played drums in my life, so it's difficult for me to go out and buy a kit when I have no way of knowing if I'll be stick with it.

But anyway, here are a few kits that I have dug up; are they any good for a starter kit?

Pulse 5-Piece Drum Kit with Cymbals
Pearl Export Drum Set

For the second one: I know Pearl is a great brand, and that set is higher quality than the Pulse set, but it's used, doesn't come with cymbals, and could (and will) increase in price as the bids come rolling in, so there's no guarantee that it will stay withing my price range.

Speaking of price range, I'm thinking around $400 or less, but I want a quality set, some some cheap piece of crap that I won't enjoy playing.

Thanks for your help!

Go with the pearl, the quality is very good... Exports have alot of professional hardware and wood on it... It sounds good and is really reliable...

It maybe be without cymbals, but the ones you would of gotten were probably garbage

Re: Looking for a first drum set

Ok, I put this set together from various places. Would this be a decent kit to start on?

Pearl export drum set $182.95
- 22" x 16" base drum
- 16" x 16" floor tom
- 12" x 10" tom
- 13" x 11" tom

Zildjian 14" hi hat cymbals + stand $79.99
- Brand-new brass hi hat cymbals
- Double-braced stand
- Free pro clutch

Zildjian Planet Z 18" crash/ride + stand $74.92
- Brand-new crash/ride
- Cannon 3-tier professional cymbal stand

Brand-new drum throne $43.90
- Double-braced

Total: $381.76

Thoughts? I already have sticks.

Avoid planet Z's

Get some Zildjian ZBT's (they come in kits with ride, crash, hats and a free china)

or Sabian B8's, (same as above) it runs around 200, but its worth it

That set up would get you started, for a slight upgrade on the cymbals, You can get a B8 performance pack on music123.com for $150.00 they also have some Paiste, and Zildian packs in that range also. These wouldn't include stands though but might get you a better cymbal. Best bet on the cymbals if you have a local store would be to go see what you can find used for stands and cymbals. Then you could try them out.

Re: Looking for a first drum set

well a pearl is a great set, but sorry to break it to you, most peoples first drum set is a piece of crap. First you got to learn the basics. and if it doesn't come with cymbals, and you want good ones, (Sabian) a crash is $70-$90 an a ride is $70-$80 and a hi-hat runs about $45-$90. But i suggest a different ride than a Sabian. My first drum set cost $350 with cymbals. Then i started buying new heads and new cymbals and selling cymbals and buying E-rings. my drumset probably cost $900. If you can find on cheap then get it, but other than that, just wait and get what you can get for now.
