Beef up the snare

I have an older ludwig snare that has a lot of ring and buzz. What is the best way to make a less than great snare sound better? Snare wires (kind)? New heads (kind)?

I play a mix of blues/roots/folk/bluegrass if that helps with suggestions at all.

I appreciate any and all input. Take Care.

Re: Beef up the snare

The snare was the only drum I delayed switching to Evans heads. I had my tried and true combination of Remo Ambassador and Diplomat combo... The single ply batter and .3mm reso.
I am now using an Evans ST dry batter and a Hazy 300 reso... a nice combination. I just need to get new snares since I have a few wires getting lose.

I usually use a basic 20 strand snare wire with mylar straps holding them in. I think I might invest time in learning more about snare wires before my next purchase. But for what you need get either a 14 or 20 strand which should do nicely.

Snares can wear out, heads wear out, shells can warp... etc.

I would dismantle the drum and recondition it. Check the bearing edge for any signs of damage or warping... seek help if you notice anything unusual. Same for the rest of the shell. Remove all the hardware and inspect it. If the tension rods are rusted... fix em or consider buying new rods. Get some nice silicone grease which will help the tension rods move nicely. You can add rubber washers to the snare which will help keep the rods from going lose. If all things look nice and the drum isn't warped or the bearing edge shot then get some new heads, new snare wires, and then visit the videos at evans web page to see their snare tuning and wire instructions.

Happy drumming.

I forgot to add... vibrations of the wires can happen from warped shells, lose wires, lose heads, etc... lots of reasons. Your best bet is to check the drum to learn where the faults are and if you can fix them... keep in mind the cost of a new snare at your local store... you just might find that the cheap $100 snare is more cost effective than working on the old ludwig.
