I've just bought a vision vmx kit and i have tuned the bass drum with a drumdial tunner to what it calls for a 22x18 kick. Im not liking the sound i'm getting from the stock protone batter head. I play all kinds of music,but mostly classic rock.

I know that I could put a pillow/pad or something in the kick. I have been looking at new batter heads, maybe a aquarian superkick series or a remo powersonic beater head. Any one use one or the other of these bass heads. Any help would be very helpful.

use a pre-muffled bass head if you don't wanna use a pillow or blanket. We got some earlier this year for our marching basses at school earlier this year and WOW...what a difference :S They all sound utterly amazing. Other than that, emads are always nice.

Shazaam, when you say pre-muffled head is the evan emads a pre- muffled head?
how about the aquarian superkick series are they pre-muffled heads? and
this new remo powersonic head that has a pad that snaps on the outside
of the batter head and can be ajusted they say on the remo site. do you know anything about it?
one more thing the pre-muffled heads you got to put on your marching basses
who made them? I know that this is a lot of question, but i'm a newbe and
just want to do my homework!

well I have a remo power sonic badder head And it works great And the pad it great because I dont have to mess with the pillow! but if I were you Id get the powersonic its awsome (and I think it looks cool too. lol

I've had great success with Evans Emad batter head. On the church drumset (pearl birch master session w/22" x 18" bass), we have an emad batter head and EQ3 resonant head with a DW pillow inside. The resonant head has a 5" hole in it which gets rid of the "boing" sound that non vented big bass drums can have. It now provides a great big THUMP sound.
My own dw drumset has a smaller 18" x 16" bass drum. On that, I have an Emad batter head and the stock (no hole) dw resonant head(I believe that head is made by remo). A smaller drum can get away with not having a big hole for air to escape.
Sometimes though, you may have to just spend some extra cash and buy a few different kinds to find the one you like. It'll be money well spent if you're picky on how your drums sound.

What is it about the drum sound that you don't like now? Does it ring to much, is it not deep enough, etc. The recommended drum dial settings are a starting point, but your preference may vary a little from the recomendation. I didn't like the sound of my bass drum, when I first got it, but then I cut a port hole in it and what a difference. There are other ways to very the sound you might want to try first before buying a new head.
