Re: pillow or no pillow?

I do...but I use a shag rug and a little pillow that rests against the batter head. Iono, sounds great to me cause it muffles it but keeps it's bassy tone and not just a dead hit. If I played jazz there wouldn't be a pillow in there though, just doesn't fit that style of music IMO if a pillow is used.

Re: pillow or no pillow?

In my recording custom in the 80's, live and studio I used nothing in my big twin 24's. It kicked serious a@@. There were 2 12" mic holes in the resonant side.

In my Stage Custom kit (current), I use a body pillow folded in half so the double side hits the batter, and the fold is on the resonant. It's a 22" and there is no mic hole, as I only play in my basement ......as of now until I can convince the bride that playing out doesn't mean I am leaving home..........Though my drums don't talk back!

Ever consider using an Evans EMAD head? I use it and it makes my bass sound awesome. It sounds even better outdoors.

I like having a good, clean, boom to my bass. I think a pillow or blanket muffles too much.

Re: pillow or no pillow?

Does the EMAD lose the punch that a pillow gives you? What kind of sustain or resonance does it give. I never heard or played one.

EMADS to me lightly muffle so it gives a nice hit of bass...but iono, the sustain isn't so long.

What kind of music you play? I ask only to see if it compares. I play hard rock, but no death metal, I'm too damn old to even listen to it, but I respect those double bass guys big time. The first time I heard Chris Adler I was floored.......

Re: pillow or no pillow?

me, I play everything. I like more rock to metal to punk type of stuff. Along with just groovin and funk...iono. If you listen to protest the hero or teh devil wears prada I play stuff sorta like that, speedy...but slows down and what not also.
My bass, liek I mentioned has a shag rug and a little pillow against the batter. My batter has one strip of premuffle which definately helps control the sound when I take out the rug and pllow. Personally, I recommend premuffled bass heads for most everything I guess.

Re: pillow or no pillow?

I used to muffle mine with a pillow, my Gretsch kit came with a resonanant head with a muffling ring, and I found after cutting a 4" port in the resonant head that I didn't need any additional muffling. that and getting it tuned properly.
