Upgrade Questions

Hi I've been using a dw pacific drum set for 3 years already (price around 650)
I am planning to add on some cymbals, drum heads and a 10'' tom.

So my questions are:

Which one matters more:shell or head?If I just get better drum heads, would the sound be only improved a lot?

Secondly,if I need a double bass pedal,tom,2 boom stand,1 straight stand,a 20" china, and 2 18" crash, what is the price range I am looking at?( for a budget saver)

At last, If I want to muff the echos of low tuned toms, should I get the rings?

Thank you so much!
*first-time posting, please be nice :P*

Re: Upgrade Questions

Well the shell will determine the overall sound of the drum...different woods = different sounds.
The head though can make what used to sound disguisting quite amazing,.
For all that iono...closest range I could give is $600 being the lowest possible and all the way up to...well about anything you want really considering you could geta $500 china if you really wanted.

Re: Upgrade Questions

Depending on what heads are on their now, a change in heads can make a very dramatic difference in the sound quality. Hard to tell you what the cost of the various hardware will cost you, since there are so many different levels of quality, and price. There are many on line music stores you can go to to get pricing on these items. Nothing beats actually going to a brick and mortar store and looking at the different options in person.

Here's the magic site again Drum Tuning Bible

This page can give you run down on how different shell wood types and heads will affect the sound of your kit, also check out the tuning and seating section. That should solve your echo problem.

Now, for a good value, double-bass pedal, I can thoroughly recomend the sonor 400 series. I've been using it for sometime now and it's a very versatile pedal. However, pretty much anything on the market will hold up a long time, so get to your local store and try them (and anything else you ever buy) out first.

Which brings me to my next point, the "20 china. Are you certain you want one? I only ask because I once desperately wanted a big china, but once I actually got my "22 2002, I was more than a little disapointed. I thought it was going to give me a short, low-pitched smash, but the physics of these things means they do ring for a long time. But my "18 alpha has been marvelous, so I counter with the "22 like a gong. Again, just try it out first.

Re: Upgrade Questions

i think head matters more, because if you get a good head and tune it right, you can get a good sound out of it. if you want cheap boom stands, i've senn some at about $60 and they were pretty good. i think sabian has a good B8 18" crash that you could probably get for $80-100 (depending on the store.) and i love Evens e-rings. they're cheap, they help tone it down a bit. i suggest you get them.
