Which Snare to keep?

I have 2 snares now, and I want to sell one so I can get some additions for my kit. I have a vintage premier that goes with my kit and a rayzorback snare I bought recently.

Which do you guys think I should sell? I think I could get more out of the Premier, and I like the sound of the rayzorback better anyway.

PS, what is the safiest way to remove the tape glue from the drum head?
The Premier

The Rayzorback

Hard to tell you which to keep without actually hearing them, it sounds like you prefer the sound of the Razorback, and you think you can get more for the Premier, sounds like your decision is made. I would consider keeping both, unless you really need the money. Too often I've sold instruments only to wish later that I'd kept them.

Re: Which Snare to keep?

I don't know of a safe way to remove glue from the heads... I have tried before with little success. I used paint thinner, nail polish remover, etc... However this was glue from bass drum impact beaters.

Ok... take this as good advice and not a put down. All I want to do is help.
I'd figure it would be hard to tell which one you like when they don't have matching heads between the drums. In my opinion pinstripes don't make good snare batter heads. Plus the snares on the Premier are not only too large for the drum but they are shot. Once the wires bend like that you pretty much can rule out them not giving you a snappy sound without choking the drum. The snare wires should rest on the drum head and not touch the bearing edge at all. That bottom head is shot as well... which will impact the sound quite a bit.

Is that Premier an all metal snare... the razorback looks to be wood. It could be the material that is making you say you like one more than the other... I'd suggest going to a local drum shop and tapping around on different snares.... find the size/material you like and see if it fits what you can afford.

IDK... your choice but I'd consider selling both to get one nicer snare drum with new heads.
Unless you really love one of those snares this might be your best bet.

Hi Dull Boy,

My vote is for keeping the Premier, and sell the Razor back. (I really dig the Premier snares)

The money you get for the Razor Back you can use for a new Aquarian Focus-X for the batter head, and a Classic Clear for the reso head, that takes care of your glue/tape problem, and maybe a new set of snares!

By then the Premier will guaranteed sound heaps better (imho) than the Razor Back.

Also, the Razor Back is quite a deep snare, which of course will always be a bit slow, but it will have a deep loud punch, more like a tom with snares.

Personally, I like my snares crisp, quick and dry, hence my recommendation, but for you that might be not the case; as always our preferences are soooohh personal.

Cheers and happy drumming,

Harry

Well I am just starting out, but I am playing mostly stuff like Alice In Chains, Pantera, right down to ZZtop. Once I get a double kick and some other bits I want to try some Slipknot...
