Any reccommendations for a new set?

I plan on selling my Mapex QR 5 piece series drumset in order to get a more advanced and better sounding set. My Mapex has basswood shells and I dont like the sound too much. My friend has a Pearl Forum and the toms sound more deep, like theres more sound to it.

I was thinking to get a Tama set. Something intermediate to advanced with a price range around 700-900 dollars. I like Maple shells. Looking for something for metal. I'm looking at the Tama Superstar Hyper-Drive 6 piece set. For 800 bucks this looks like a nice set although it says they are Birch/Basswood shells. Would like some opinions on this: Buy Tama Superstar SK 6 Piece Hyper Drive Shell Set (Brushed Metallic Black) At Sam Ash

I was also considering Pearl because my friend has a Pearl Export set, pretty old but in good condition. Maybe its the way he has it set up but I find it hard to maneuver the hardware. But I would like some reccommendations on an intermediate to advanced Pearl set. Again Maple is nice sounding to me. I really cant get a chance to test out sets because the closest Sam Ash is 26 Miles away, Guitar Center too.

I need a set I can build upon and make bigger. With my Mapex QR set its so hard finding new drums unless I get them from the company direct. Tama and Pearl are big names so hopefully it will be easier to customize one of them. Any advice and help is greatly appreciated! This is a worthwile but costly investment.

Also this Tama set is very big and good price for the size of it, but Id need some opinions on this or knowlage of it. Again I never get to test these things out. Tama Rockstar 8-Piece Double-Bass Shell Pack and more Acoustic Drum Sets at GuitarCenter.com.

In that price range I would recommend you check out the Gretsh Catalina Maple sets Sam ash has a six piece Catalina Maple set for $699.00, I'm sure you could find similar deals on Musician's friend, and Music123. These are only shells with Tom mounts, and don't include Cymbal stands, snare Stands, thrones, or pedals, but I'm assuming you have those from your current kit.

I would also recommend the Gretsch Catalina maple set. Currently I play the catalina birch set by Gretsch and I love it. Very detailed sound, excellent tone and a look comparable to sets costing easily over $1000. The only thing lacking is die-cast hoops on the toms like the Tama Superstar has. You should check out American Musical Supply. Sam Ash is a good store and they have a lot of locations but the American Musical supply store online at americanmusical.com has an awesome payment plan. I've been shopping there a lot lately getting more gear for my home studio. By the way, I'm new to this forum...How are you guys doing?
