Is the top ply gone all together or just cracked? The reason I ask is that the patch is sticky and if there is a hole in the top ply and you put the patch over it the two plys would then be stuck together. This will definately dampen if not kill the resonance of the batter by removing the ability of the two plys to move independantly of each other. By the same token the top ply is already damaged so you have already lost resonance.

With that said, it would hold up for a while that way while you save up for a new head.
only the outer ply's damaged
just a tear on it. is there a possibility the beaters on my pedals have become too abrasive?

If it just a tear and no hole then the patch will give you more play time on the head (but it won't sound as good as it did without a tear).

It is possible that the beater has a rough spot although it is more likely that the beater is not hitting the head squarely. If you are using a plastic or rubber beater and it is turned slightly to one side or the other causing the edge to hit the head instead of the face of the beater that might do it.

ah that could be the problem!
i've needed to replace the thread on the part that screws in keeping the pedal attacked to my kick so atm it's just being held there by the weigh of my kick so it could easily come slightly off angle.

Thanks a lot!

Make sure that when the beater strikes the head, it's perpendicular to the head and hitting evenly.

I've come across a few drummers that don't check this. The beater mallet is probably hitting at an angle.

Also use a kick pad.
