Hey ya'll, i was wonderin if you could give some tips on my bass drum head. i've busted four of em' in like 2.5 years and was wondering if its due to how i'm tuning the heads, how hard i'm playing, or if i just need to put the lil' beater pads on the heads. i know the pads help alot but i didnt think they were THAT crucial. What is the deal? i use evans emad heads. Thanks!

ummm...not a clue what to say. Never broke a bass head...ever. The bass head patches/pads may help. When I was reading reviews people were saying they tore em up...but mine still looks near new and it's been on for just over a year I think now. If you have dual sided beaters(plastic + padded) try using the padded...but make sure it's in good condition, the pad isn't harder than anything and/or worn to the plastic. Iono how hard you're hitting, so not a clue if you're hitting to hard. If you dent your heads easily you're tuned wrong or you're hitting to hard

You using wood beaters or somethin'!!!!!!!!!

I've had mine on for (I've owned it for about a year) and the previous guy a few months. It's a stock remo / yamaha. I added a patch, but I use stock round felt beaters.

I'm using the good ol' pdp double sided beater on the padded side. ????

You must play very hard, what style music? I play hard, in fact several people have said I was the loudest drummer they've played with, but I don't break heads often, and never a bass drum head.

yah man i dont know. hardcore/metalcore is my fave but thats not like all i play. but even if i was playing hard theres no way i should be bustin heads this much right? i feel like the only drummer in the world with this problem. ;[ i dont think im like a retard drum tuner either.

lol, no doubt. not a clue what else to say...make sure your beaters and scratched/have stuff/marks on em that'd cut the head...? :/ . ummm, I guess one thing you can try is a patch. regardless how hard I hit mine I don't think it'd break. Only reason I've broken a head on my set before is cause a tip broke/chipped and I didn't know n yea, popped it.

Just thought of this, where are the heads breaking? At the spot you strike or near the rim. I can see a bad bearing edge ripping a head.

jhilldrums has a good point on where is the damage.

I play with plastic beaters, EMAD 2 , and impact badges. I tend to wear the impact badges out if they are cheap though. I have slug percussion ones on now which are a thin polycarbonate type material. I don't know if they still make them but I highly suggest them. They seem to be more durable and don't impact my head vibration quite as much.

I change heads once a year... just for good measure. Though I feel they have lots of life still on them before I change them. Since I record regurally I feel the expense is worth the fresh heads.

Also ensure that your bass drum is as parallel to the floor that you can get it. If your bass drum is angled and if you tighten down your pedal you can cause damage to the hoop, the drum head, and even the drum over time. Check out this video on evans website.

Yah its bustin right where i hit it. i'll just be playin when all the sudden my beater goes through the head. possibly the worst feeling in the world. i guess i'll just try gettin some patches and maybe some new beaters. but its happened on two different bass drums that i've had so i know its not the drum.
