Is this a good deal?

So i'm planning on buying a new drumset and i found a Tama Starclassic performer 5-piece on craigslist. Went and saw them the drums beautiful condition. The only thing is they're kinda old bought in '97 i think. comes with 3 meinl classic cymbals and the guy is asking 1300 for the whole setup i think it's a pretty good deal just wondering what my fellow drummers think. thanks =D

Re: Is this a good deal?

Sounds like a good price... Starclassic is a good line of TAMA.
Having shell penetration with the bass drum (toms mounted on the bass drum) does limit where you can place them and affects resonance. I'd check the drums before buying. Take off the heads and look at the bearing edge for damage. Also this will allow you to check for cracks. If you really want to be a stickler find a flat table and place the drum on some black paper. Shine a flashlight from the inside of the shell and look for light leaking from under.

All in all if the drums sound good then get em.

Re: Is this a good deal?

Do your research! I have starclassic performers from the same era, and one thing you should know is the shells are birch and bassword. The performers made now a days are all birch. I do think $1300 is a little high for that kit, but then again I haggle with anyone on craigslist selling any gear. Follow what CJDG said and make sure you check the bearing edges. I wont lie, mine aren't perfect. What's the finish on this kit and are the toms the bigger sizes that were popular back then?

Re: Is this a good deal?

I researched them I know that they are birch and basswood i was kind of hoping fthey were solid birch but they still sound good i think. I took a look at all the bearing edges while i'm no expert they do look pretty good to me. The set was only used for a few months then basically put in storage for ten years kind of sad really lol. It has a solid black finish with a brass snare. 16x22 bass, 10x10, 11x12, and 14x14 toms. What do you think a good price would be?

I would offer the seller a $1000, if it does not come with any hardware. A new starclassic performer from west coast drum center is $1500. Actually, if I was in your position I would offer him a grand and tell the buyer to keep his cymbals. If the set is in really good condition.

I agree with Patknives. An eleven year old Tama 5-peice kit with three Meinl cymbals isn't wirth 1300 bucks, Starclassic or not. A thousand or less
