Making an old snare into a floor tom

A few friends and I are going on a cross country trip next week. I am building a makeshift kit out of old toms and snares to use on the road. The floor tom is a perfect bass, I have pearl sensitone stare as my main snare, and an old ludwig jet snare as a floor tom. Any tips on how to make the Jet sound like a deep floor tom?

EDIT: I was wondering if a pearl jungle gig kit will fit any old floor tom. Do i need a pearl mounting kit for it?

Re: Making an old snare into a floor tom

The deep sound of a floor tom comes from the depth and size.
due to the nature of that drums depth/width the only thing you
can do is fashion some form or shroud that will resonate with the
drum. You could get industrial and connect a large pot to the bottom
of the snare. Try to get the snare drum to a 14" depth at least and you
should get a nice sound. Thinking about this again you could try to modify
a trash can, pvc pipe, or any other tube(s) large enough to match that drum.

As far as head selection choose double ply heads for both top and bottom.
That will kill some of the high pitch tones and let the lows come through.

Re: Making an old snare into a floor tom

I've seen a 10" dw shortstack tom used as a floor before. it sounded unreal. the head was a powerstroke 3.
I was thinking of using a powerstroke 3, but have never used a powerstroke 4. what would you suggest?

Cool Re: Making an old snare into a floor tom

Hi, I suppose you could tune the snare low enough, but without much of a shell there won't be much resonance
