Oh..yeah, I know..I had thin skin this morning! I was all stoked with getting this new shelly in a couple weeks and I read those few posts..and kinda deflated.
It's all good now.

Re: Gretsch Catalina Maple

Just traded my MM bass to the owner of our local music store. Now I have a set of the Gretsch Catalina Maples that I pick up when the cases arrive.

For those of you who like and use this kit, what are your recommendations for replacement heads? This trio plays loud and hard.

Will likely be tuning up in 4ths from kick. I generally like the sound of Remos on my Tama kit, but there are lots of Evans fans too. Haven't played maple shells before either, and their natural sound has to be a factor.

Ideas?

Thanks.

Re: Gretsch Catalina Maple

I've got the Gretsch USA Custom Maple kit.

I use the Remo Pinstripes and a DrumDial to tune them within the spectrum. Then I fine tune to my liking.

So far I've got no quams about it.

Good luck on your new kit.

Thanks! I like the Pinstripes on my Tamas, will probably use them on Gretsch, barring overwhelming support for Evans.

Here comes the Evans brigade. I would totally put Evans g2's on that puppy. Or if you like more focus go the ec2. I found remos went dead way too fast, changed to Evans and never looked back. Give it a whirl, you won't be disappointed.

Thanks Skinslapper,
It's a new kit, this will be new sound for me. And Evans is the way I'm going.

Re: Gretsch Catalina Maple

Thanks for all comments on the Gretsch Catalina Maples.
I went with the Evans g2's, EMAD2 kick. Wow, what a difference between this kit and my Tamas. The band really likes them too, as they are louder and have nice tone. Not to mention, playing 6-note instead of 4 makes a good changeup.
If money were no object, yeah, I'd have gone with the USA Maples. But, this was a trade for my old bass, and I got complete new kit for it. Compared with other kits in this price/quality range, this seems like very nice kit, and would recommend it for budget constrained drummers. And if you get that touring gig and start making real jack, you can always move up and keep this kit for practice.
