Die cast hoops and Re - rings

I am still somewhat confused on whether or not it is worth ot to have Die cast hoops on your toms or not ( I understand for for the snare drum ).

Also are Re- rings worth it , and do the Die cast hoops and Re- rings work well together or should they not be used together.

I am looking for a powerful , fast attack, loud sound but not really sure if these will get me that or the reverse affect.

If you want fast attack, go for shallower tom sizes.
Diecast hoops and re-rings have their uses, but attack isnt a primary motivation for getting them.

I use E rings on all my toms, Cant live with out them... If your happy with the sounds your toms are making, I would say stick with them.

Hang on... Are we talking about the same thing?

By "Re-rings" I was referring to the (usually) 2-ply hoops built inside thinner drumshells for extra structural support.

Re: Die cast hoops and Re - rings

My understanding of diecast hoops is that they give your drum a certain sound which is different from that of steel hoops, wood hoops, etc. You choose a diecast hoop because it gives you a certain sound.

According to Damo Petricelli who has posted elsewhere on this forum (and who knows a whole lot more than I do), diecast hoops are great for volume, but they lessen the tunable range of the drum. Accordingly, he uses them on a snare for volume, but he would not use them on toms because it would affect their tunable range.

Re: Die cast hoops and Re - rings

Here is what my ears tell me, die cast hoops focus the sound more and the drum also sounds punchier. Triple flanged hoops give you more spread in sound, a softer attack and i prefer that. I have played a set of Pearls that had support hoops as well as die-cast hoops and to my surprise i liked the sound.

I suppose Gretsch players use those drums for a reason. It erks me that drummers seem to be less involved in their instrument than say guitar players that toil over how many pick up windings each position has, tube versus solid state, Marshall versus Hi-Watt and the list goes on. Drummers buy something to bash on, put a something or other head on the thing and go. Half the time drummers dont even know what they've got for resonant heads.
