DW versus Tama versus Sonor

Posted: Fri Dec 26, 2008 9:30 am Post subject: Tama versus DW versus Sonor

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I was strictly looking at custom drums but I seen a few things that made me consider otherwise.

For starters I am not a fan of Pearl , Yamaha , Ludwig , Premier, Mapex, Ayotte , Gretch.

Sorry I just don't like there tom mounting systems ( even though they are all great drum makers ) there stuff does not look heavy duty enough for me.

Anyways I was looking at the Tama Bubinga's last night, they look very nice but how does bubinga compare to maple.

I am looking for Fast, loud, attack ,powerful drums, would anyong say that bubinga are louder drums than maple. Just trying to see what Bubinga brings to the table. If maple are louder that is somewhat important to mee as well.

So the next question is Do I go with DW collectors, Tama Bubinga's or do I like
Sonor SQ2 or Delite series.

I was never a big Sonor fan but after researching some threads yesterday many people are saying Sonor blow DW out of the water, so in that case I must consider the Sonor's

Any help would be great, money is somewhat a issue but not completely, I believe in you get what you pay for

Well, I'd say you are missing the boat a bit. DW and Tama are nice production drums, sure, but the custom drum makers can exceed the quality and craftsmanship, sound, attack EVERyTHING you're looking for by far for less money. With DW and Tama you're paying for the name more than the product.

Call a smaller drum maker up and talk to the guys that make the drums, they can tell you exactly what you need to fit your style and wants.--Can't call somebody at Tama and get that kind of service-- Medicineman Drums is known for talking alot with the customers to help them get exactly what they want...

Here's links to some small maker's pages:

If you want to see just about all the Sonor Sets go to SONOR.COM and look around they have it all. I've noticed that alot of Drummers on youtube are using Sonor like Steve Smith I heard that the hardware was really heavy duty and the drums can't be beat. Good Luck on your choice

Have you tried doing a search for custom made Teak wood drums? If you want heavy sounds. Also Korean drums might be what you're looking for. Good luck on you search. Gretsch USA Custom drums are good enough for me, and if you go to the videos at the "Gretschdrums" website, you might get some idea as to how you might want your drums made.

I'm editing this post because, I've been to a lot of Native American Pow-Wows. Talk about the big boom drums. If your taste is loud drums with a quick response, your only alternative would be to save your money and plan on paying what you really get for.
I've been drumming for over 50 years. Unfortunately my Idol Mitch Mitchell (From the Hendrix Experience) has past on. But I also know that his taste in drums varied from Slingerland, Ludwig, DW, Pearl, Gretsch, and so on, depending on how to complement the music.. But he mostly used Zildjian and Paiste symbols. Versatility was his jazz drumming style that complemented whatever the sound.
Some drummers that could double kick at over 200 BPM is alright for drum solos as long as it's not over 3.5 minutes. Otherwise doing this 200bpm just drowns out the sound of the band.
If you've been drumming for along time, experience will prevail, if not then your just looking to be just another loud drummer. "Just some food for thought", nothing personal. "STOMP" uses these big steel 50 gallon barrels and alter them. They may look like crap, but the sound enhancement is explicit.

Re: DW versus Tama versus Sonor

I just got another thought "Ouch". In my earlier days, I remember some drummers removing the resonance head from the drums and lining the insides of the drums with a mixture of roofing tar and to thin it out some kerosene to thin out the tar, to get the heavy loud sounds. That is with leaving the bottom "resonance head" off the drums. It was the big bang theory of drumming back in the 70's. It didn't matter if the drums were made of birch or maple or for that matter, which brand. And for dampening the bass drum, a simple wool blanket was placed in the bass drum. Preferably an army and navy wool blanket, a cheap purchase.
