Re: Are electric drums good enough to replace acoustic?

I have to admit...I am old school with drums. For me personally I prefer acoustic drums, but to answer your question...Yes electric drums are good. I have played a couple of kits. I have played Yamaha and Roland. Both ( depending on the kit ) have good features, but I feel that the Roland-V ( one of the kits that I have played) is the best.

The cymbals (as you described your affinity for them) are nowhere near as nice as the real thing and are, in my opinion, the biggest weakness that electronic drums have no matter the manufacturer. There is just too much data, too many different sounds that one cymbal can make, and today's technology would be hard pressed to reproduce one cymbal accurately with all the nuance, dynamics and overtones available across its surface-- let alone a whole kit of them.

Next biggest weakness is the need for a PA that can handle the bottom end of the kit if you ever want to use them to play live. Big wattage is necessary so you could spend a small mint just getting the setup playable live.

I think the electronic drums give you greater versatility overall, but I just recently had to purchase a new acoustic kit for the gigs I'm playing. Sound guys love the E drums but acoustics have far better articulation and I LOVE real cymbals--always complimented for my cymbal work and found that I could do less than 10% of it with the E drums....
Perfect discription of the e-pad world dude. Don't forget that with e-pads you lose the " in the room dimensional aspect"of acoustic drums. Very important for the live listener.
Not so with ELECTRIC DRUMS.

Hey dudes and dudettes,
I have owned the TD-7 and the TD-10. They are great for quiet practicing and can be used in Live performance when monitoring is well supported... It can be easy to transport and set up time is usually reduced... The feel is different, I actually use different sticks when playing exclusively on pads. The stick response is altered slightly... The thing that first pops to mind about using elec's with a band is dynamic response that you expect to be in your face is coming out of a speaker somewhere.. Drumset Amplifiers work well here. Roland makes one that was pretty Kickass...

I have recently begun using a pad or two on the left side of my acoustic setup for accent notes and unique fills/ or triggering a sequence track that I then play along with(ex, conga track). It's really about control of sound and volume...
Anyone checked out the new Simmons Hybrid Kit yet?

Spider Dan......Simmons Hybrid Kit ????...I wasn't aware that Simmons had new kit out. A number of years ago Simmons was the kit to own. I hope that someone tries and posts a review.

Ha-ha- lets go back to the original topic:
Are electric drums good enough to REPLACE acoustic kits?

Answer: NEVER

Why??
How many drummers do you know who are playing on the world-stage performing with top bands who use electric (electronic) kits ?

And I am not talking about a little bit of triggers, pads , or pre-recorded licks to spice up the mix a bit!

Of Course this is extremely OPINIATED but hey, do'nt you love the forum format of this site?

Cheers and happy drumming,

Harry

As a gigging drummer I use acoustic drums live but have a Roland TD9 for practice, working out numbers etc. In this role with headphones they are superb but I would advise you to get mesh pads. I've used them live but you need faith in the guy out front who is the only one who knows how they sound off stage, and it's weird only having the drum sound below and behind you on stage thru monitor. If you enjoy drumming but need to do it silently don't hesitate, get a Roland.

About electric or acoustic drums I think it really depends what you are going to use them for.I play at Weddings and Private parties and electric drums just don't have the sound that I need I'm not looking for the sound the electric drums sends, then again if I were playing at a Rock club or an event where I wanted the sound that electric drums sends I would use them, It all depends what you like and what your going to use them for. I don't own electric drums just acoustic and I've been playing a long time. SLINGERLAND

Re: Are elctric drums good enough to replace acoustic?

I too am exclusive to acoustic drums but I must admit they sound pretty good in a techno kinda way. I was at The Guitar Center and heard a guy playing them quite well and I would definately consider buying a set if I had the need for quiet practice or space constraints.

I recently caught a live concert where the drummer was using electronic drums with real cymbals and I couldn't hear that the drums were electronic. I was impressed.
