The Deal Of A Lifetime... (Review of Chad Smith's Signature Set) So, because my old drum set was a little lacking in the size/ sound/ appearance department, I was looking around for a new set. Call it luck, or just sheer good timing, but just as I began looking for a new set, Pearl (My favorite drum maker) unveiled two new cheap drum sets: the Chad Smith and Joey Jordison signature sets. Though I do admire Joey's set, Chad Smith's set seemed perfect. So, after receiving about 400 dollars for Christmas (thank you dad!), I went out to my local Guitar Center, and, once again, my sheer luckiness prevailed, as they still had the same Chad Smith signature set they had about a month before the Christmas season. After paying my 400 dollars, I was given the floor model, and took it to my band's practice location.
Now, I must preface this review/ story with another fact: my old drum set was equipped with Evans Hydraulic Heads, and an EMAD bass head. So, you must understand my tenative nature towards stock Pearl drum heads: and, to lower my belief in the sound and quality of Pearl's stock drum heads, I had just broken the bass head on my friends very pricey Pearl set. Not only did i not enjoy Pearl drum heads, but i though that there was no possible way that they could sound as good as my old set.
After setting up my bass and toms, my guitar player was skeptical. But, after hitting the bass drum accidentally, by guitar player's eyes lit up: the 22x18" bass drum gave a boom the likes of which my 20 inch bass drum could not even come close to. The toms gave a similar boom, and when pared with my snare and cymbals, the set was great. All it took was a little tuning and modification of the toms and bass, and the set was fantastic.
If you can find this set and are in search of a good rock set, I recommend the Chad Smith 4 piece shell pack. But, be sure to remember that for 400 dollars, all you get are 3 toms and a bass. But, if you have a good trebel-y snare, this is a great set.
FYI, this is my current setup:
