Ludwig Accent CS
Buy Ludwig Accent 5-Piece Drum Kit and Zildjian ZBT Cymbal Set | Complete Drum Sets | Musician's Friend

This is the kit I have, this one has cymbals, 13' ZBT hi hat, and a 18' ZBT crash ride. I really reccomend this set mainly because, the stock head on it, actually don't sound that bad, but if you but on some G2's or something, they sound like this kit should cost 1000 bucks. Also the hardware lasts pretty well, and overall I'd give it a 4.5 / 5

Sonor eXtreme Force
Buy Sonor eXtreme Force 22 Drum Set with Free 14" x 14" Floor Tom | Shell Packs | Musician's Friend

I've heard alot of good things from Sonor, apparently there 'low - end ' kits sound very exposive and professional. I've seen some videos miced and unmiced, also live at my music store, and it sounds really well even with default heads. This one comes with a free 14' floor tom, so i think this would be a great buy

Pearl Visions VSX
Buy Pearl Vision VSX 5-Piece Standard Drum Set | Complete Drum Sets | Musician's Friend

This one I'd honestly recommend based on Pearl's amazing quality of drumsets and hardware. I've never seen or played on this kit, but the reviews seem very positive.

Tama Rockstar
Buy Tama Rockstar 5-Piece Shell Pack | Shell Packs | Musician's Friend
I know I've said this alot but, I reccomend this kit, you can expand it to a 8 peice kit for around 400 or something, and I've played at these at school, and WOW there amazing! Such punch for a cheap price.

Plus if you've been looking for a cymbal pack, mainly a 14 hat, and a 18 crash ride you should consider
Paiste 201
Buy Paiste 201 Bronze Essential Set 14/18 | Cymbal Packs | Musician's Friend
Meinl MCS
Buy Meinl MCS Hi-hat Crash/Ride Cymbal Pack | Cymbal Packs | Musician's Friend
Sabian B8 w/ free splash

Zildjian ZBT free 14' crash w/ mail and rebate
Buy Zildjian ZBT 3 2008 Cymbal Pack | Cymbal Packs | Musician's Friend

Good luck on choosing the right one, hopefully it'll last you for years

What I reccomend is the Tama rockstar with the Zildjian ZBT IMO.

i checked out every thing on the list. I don't think i will by the zbt series cymbals. i would love to buy the tama rock star but i dont know much about what hardware to buy and hardware looks pretty expensive. i had considered meinl before but right now im want to pick which drum set i want first. so i will probably buy the cymbals later. im gonna also say no to the ludwig. i am still considering the sonor but i will most likely not buy it if i get other suggestions. the area i live in dont have much music stores too so i dont know if they will have these drum sets.right now, my decision is swayed toward the Gretsch catilina.

I would congratulate you on your choice of cymbals. PST3 is a fine range, but if you ever get chance to upgrade any of them to a PST5, you'll really hear the difference!

And if on the offchance you save up enough, go Alpha series...

Just some advice from a serial Paiste user!

Re: Need help picking Drum Set

Check out the Pearl Vision 5pc with the extra 10" tom. I got mine when it was still the Export Series (discontinued). It's an excellent kit. GREAT hardwear, what I use of it anyways, I have a ICON curved rack. I'm really glad Pearl put the I.S.S mounting system on all of their entry level kits. As for the sound, I'm not a tuning god or anything but I could never get the sound I wanted out of the toms with pinstripes on them, so I bought Remos Muffl'er rings and put them on my toms and now I can get crisp highs or those punchy lows that I love so much. If you're willing to go alittle over your price range, I'm sure you'd be happy with the kit.

Re: Need help picking Drum Set

And like Dr. Mapex said, Pst3 is an excellent starting cymbal pack. I never had the 5's tho. I bought a 10" alpha metal splash and went straight to RUDE's cuz I've used some alphas and they didnt seem like they were thick enough for me. But if you don't beat the crap out of your kit like me, you should be fine with Alpha.
