Question Need help picking Drum Set

Hi am an intermediate drummer. 13 years old. i play jazz and rock and want to buy a drum set. i usually play on my schools drum set after school and am in the jazz band, but i want to get my own drum set. i'm a first time buyer.

im thinking of getting a Ludwig Pinnacle 5-Piece Drum Kit and want an opinion from other drummers. I cant buy anything too expensive and this drum set is cheap and has good reviews. my original plan was to buy $800 the most. i chose this set because 1) its cheap 2) good reviews 3) it lasts for a long time if used at home 4 since its cheap i could buy better cymbals and drum heads. im planning on getting either zildjan zbt eries cymbals(just one crash ride and hi hat for now) and some evans or remo drum heads.

Tell me what u guys think of this. if i should buy something else? (if so, what should i buy?) if i should add something to my list of what to buy. i got a good deal on the drum set from costco then any other website. $436.79 total with shipping (free).

please remember i have a low budget. probably $650-$700 max including drum set price.

Re: Need help picking Drum Set

Ipdrummer44 I read your ad and I have been playing over 40 years. I think I can help you with your problem. I would look on line to buy because you'll get a better deal on line than in a store and a store like costco doesn't know much about musical instruments. Look on musicians friend and you can see alot of different sets of drums, if your looking for a good not very expensive set you should look at a few Pulse sets the drums are really made well and the hardware is good and the cymbals sound pretty good too.Read the reviews on some of the pulse drumsets and judge for yourself, I know a few people who have pulse drums and they are happy with them, you can look at other sets their prices and read the reviews on them and you may be able to make a judgement from there. GOOD LUCK SLINGERLAND

Re: Need help picking Drum Set

Ipdrummer44 this is SLINGERLAND again I forgot to mention that if you go online go to Dr.Cluck's Music emporium or Sigler music which you usually can find their sets on e-bay, or google it you will find Sonor 2007 sets made of Birch for under $800.00 maybe you can work a deal with them on the hardware as I'm not sure if the sets come with the hardware and cymbals or not I think they just may.Sonor make extremely good sets and you get alot for the money, so if possible try to talk your parents into it. When I first started out I was using cheap cymbals and was playing at Weddings and clubs, it was a while before I bought my first Zildjian cymbal. And you have a ways to go before you do any gigs so concentrate on getting good drums, first and worry about the cymbals later. These 2 companies also carry different name drum sets other than Sonor so look around. If you need any further help just e-mail me and I will help you out I've helped alot of other young drummers get sets too. Keep in touch and GOOD LUCK SLINGERLAND

I would walk into the local music store and try to play as many drums as I could. It will help you judge the right set for you. But, you might like the yamaha stage custom.

first of all i would like to thank u for the fast reply. i have been searching online and reading customer reviews all this time. its that i found the lowest price on costco instead of musician's friend. i already looked at musicians firend and other websites like zzsound, and interstate music. im sorry for not making that clear in my post.i also looked at your other reply and would like to say that i like the website for sigler music. im not sure on the pulse kits because they r really cheap(money wise) and the customer reviews said its what u would expect for a beginner. im been playing for 4 years and want a good drum set that would last a long. my main thing is quality. but hopefully not too expensive. right now i will buy a drum set and will worry about the cymbals later. ill take it one step at a time like u suggested. btw my security system wont let me enter dr.clucks for safety reasons. same with Google. its marked as a dangerous website. i also looked into the 5PC Yamaha Stage Custom Birch and im impressed at the low price. there r some good cutomer reviews on it but i want an opinion on what u guys think. i also checked the sonor drum sets and im ok with the price, but i dont know what ill do with the extra (free)tom.. just to let u guys know, i will be buying in around july because i will be going half way around the world next month on the 23rd and wont be back until 11th of july. i dont want a new drumset to just sit in my garage and collect dust. also i will be away for the next 3 days stuck in a hotel room so i wont have access to any computers. i will; try to use my psp with the hotel's free wifi. ill try to see what u guys wrote but wont be able to reply. (i hate psp typing). Thanks!!!

Re: Need help picking Drum Set

Ipdrummer44 this is SLINGERLAND Yamaha makes excellent drums I know as I'm looking for a new set myself. I recommended Sonor because I'll be buying a Sonor set. You will always have use for the extra tom tom later on believe me.Sonor makes an incredible set and the Birch set fits right into your Price. You will be able to use these drums as a PRO and gig with them, these are sets to gig with not just starter sets. The sound of these drums are excellent you can hear Sonor drums on youtube.com let me know what you think. Can't argue with this logic at all. Checking out the local drum shop first to find out what you like, then you can look on-line often the local retailer will match the o-line price.

Re: Need help picking Drum Set

lol the hotel has 2 computers. wow. i checked the youtube vids and the sonor sound good.(so does the yamaha stage set). what does pro kit mean? i most of the ones i saw were pro and they were relly cheap. i saw one extreme force one and have to say that the customer reviews were great. they didnt even reommend new drum heads. they said if u tune them right it sounds good. so i tthink i will stick with sonor for now. but remember i wont be buying until later on so i will do alot of rsearch on this drum. which kind of sonor should i get? and why r the prices so low?

Re: Need help picking Drum Set

i'm in the same boat as you, i have just started playing the drums and am hoping to learn mostly metal music, but i live in the UK so if anyone could help me out too, i was thinking of getting quite a decent kit so i don't grow-out of it quickly as i get better. i have about £800 to spend on it.
i would be happy just to know which brands are the best and then go off and find more about the one i want myself, but as much help as possible would be appriciated
thanks katie
