Go used! There are so many "gently", well cared for used kits out there! there's no end to them.Craigslist is awesome and adiccting to shop through everyday.I just found mine there. I am in Wis. but that dont matter. I would go 5 - piece. It's not to big and not to small. Easy to learn on but you can tour with it. Plus you can always add some peices and accessorize! Thats the fun part! You can tell the beat up sets from the well cared for gems. See a picture and then go look! You want a hi-hat rig, a ride, and at least one crash (two's better)as far as cymbals go. My set came as a package. I will post a pic tomorrow maybe. Oh yeah... you'll need sticks!lol....Good luck! I love Ludwigs. I also had a pearl back in the day that was my baby! First set (40 years ago) was a 4 piece Ludwig my Grandma (God bless her) bought for me.

I personally would take a higher quality used kit over a new entry level kit any day of the week.
your idea is very helpful. thanks

Thumbs up Re: Drum Sets: Used vs. Cheap, New

Go second hand every time...i paid £95 for a set of vintage 1976 Rogers in a gold metal wrap with full history and its mint....having looked at similar kits i was surprised to see that the kit is worth a great deal more...over £????..it sounds fantastic it turns people on when they see it. I would say you have to sift through a lot of kits to get the golden egg but they are out there...It freaks other drummers out because they want it but because its vintage they are difficult to come across...Guitarists hate it because there vintage guitar don't get the look in anymore.....just research what you buy look all over the kit for damage scratches badges missing and water damage or dry and splitting inside the shell and signs its been near a heat sorce check the plating on hard ware go on gut feeling is the colour rite would it look like on stage would I buy it could i re- sell if need be ...also look at what comes with the kit hard ware cymbals and spares....don't look surprised at a rare cymbal or mike..keep facial gesture to minimum celibrate once your on your drive back home ...if the people are genuine always make an offer of good will to seal the deal if you know the cymbals are Zildjian in good condition and there are a full set that's $1000 and over straight off so offer $50-$70 for the cymbals on top as a Gesture of good will and then before you know it you got a great and kit cymbals.......get history on a the kit a photo of the origional drummer its something to keep along with the kit and be part of its History
